About The Position

This position leads a team to organize a two-week camp experience for recruiting diverse youth to healthcare professions. An ability to model inclusive and nondiscriminatory practices in all activities is required. Through collaboration with the project team, health professionals, school officials, community members, and community professionals, the position assists youth in learning about healthcare positions through hands-on experiential learning. This project will provide extensive orientation to support the success of those selected for these position(s).

Requirements

  • Must have completed at least one year of post-secondary academic experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of basic theories of individual and family development.
  • Demonstrate previous (volunteer or paid) experience of working with diverse youth populations
  • Familiarity with health professions
  • One day free per week for site visits.

  • Above-average organizational skills and an ability to write well, with some knowledge of data management through basic computer applications.
  • An ability to follow safety instructions that reduce risks and convey those instructions to the youth clearly.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and online applications.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Additional language skills beyond English are considered positively.
  • An ability to follow other duties as requested for project success.
  • Previous JMU employment is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Development – Designing engaging educational programs that align with camp learning objectives.
  • Instructor Coordination – Recruiting and managing guest speakers to lead specialized sessions.
  • Activity Planning – Creating and arranging hands-on activities for students.
  • Camper Engagement – Ensuring campers are actively participating and benefiting from the program content.
  • Assessment & Feedback – Evaluating the effectiveness of programs and making improvements.
  • Safety & Compliance – Maintaining health and safety standards while ensuring a positive learning environment. Making sure that programming adheres to state and JMU policy.
  • Parent & Community Communication – Keeping parents informed about camper progress and collaborating with JMU institutions.
