Camera Optical System Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple’s Camera Hardware Engineering group researches, designs, develops, tests, and qualifies camera hardware for Apple products. This role develops and supports custom lens design and development, including new lens designs, characterization, and integration into CMOS image sensor-based camera modules. The engineer analyzes how optical elements influence camera-module image quality, works with suppliers on prototype design and manufacturing, defines metrology and analyzes data to troubleshoot supplier issues, and communicates design decisions to cross-functional teams. The role requires independently driving schedules and taking designs into production. International travel of 10%–15% per year is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field, with relevant industry experience.
  • Experience with lens design fundamentals, metrology, and/or integration.
  • Experience using optical software such as ZEMAX, CODE V, FRED, or LightTool.
  • Ability to work as a high-energy, resourceful, multitasking problem solver within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to travel internationally 10%–15% per year.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD and a minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience in lens design tolerance and stray light analysis.
  • Experience in lens characterization methodology and instrumentation.
  • Ability to perform comprehensive optical and image-quality characterization of lenses and camera modules.
  • Working knowledge of optomechanics.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and support custom lens design and development.
  • Work on new lens designs, characterization, and integration into CMOS image sensor-based camera modules.
  • Analyze the influence of optical elements on camera-module image quality.
  • Work with suppliers on prototype design and manufacturing.
  • Troubleshoot supplier issues by defining appropriate metrology, requesting and analyzing data, and deciding on solutions.
  • Communicate design decisions to the cross-functional team.
  • Drive schedules independently and take designs into production.
