Camera Optical System Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

The Camera Hardware Engineering group researches, designs, develops, tests, and qualifies camera hardware for Apple products. The role develops and supports custom lens design and development, including new lens designs, characterization, and integration into CMOS image sensor-based camera modules. The engineer analyzes how optical elements affect camera-module image quality, works with suppliers on prototype design and manufacturing, and takes designs into production. The position involves troubleshooting supplier issues by defining appropriate metrology, requesting and analyzing data, and deciding on solutions, then communicating design decisions to cross-functional teams. The engineer is expected to drive their own schedule without substantial overhead. International travel of 10%–15% per year is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience with lens design fundamentals.
  • Master’s or PhD and a minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience in lens design metrology and integration.
  • Experience in lens design tolerance and stray light analysis.
  • Experience with lens characterization methodology and instrumentation.
  • Proficiency using an optical software package such as ZEMAX, CODE V, FRED, or LightTools.
  • Ability to perform comprehensive optical and image-quality characterization of lenses and camera modules.
  • Ability to work as a high-energy, resourceful, multitasking problem solver within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to travel internationally 10%–15% per year.
