Camera Algorithms Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple's Camera Algorithm team develops image capture and processing/rendering algorithms for Apple product cameras. The role works on core camera, ISP, and machine-learning technologies using Apple's image signal processing pipeline and hardware components, such as the Apple Neural Engine. The engineer helps define how Apple cameras capture, process, and render still images and video, collaborating with Silicon Design, Camera Hardware, QA, and other teams in a fast-paced environment that values innovation, iteration, autonomy, and a self-starter attitude. The algorithm developer may work in areas including scene understanding and auto-exposure ISP algorithms; ISP development and tuning; architecture, configuration, and pixel-processing tuning; tone rendering and grading for target displays; SDR/HDR remapping; auto white balance and color management; runtime optical flow, image registration, and fusion; and machine-learning solutions for real-time image processing with low latency and low power consumption.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, Physics, or a similar field.
  • Hands-on runtime ISP algorithm development experience.
  • Knowledge of ISP hardware processing pipelines.
  • Knowledge of camera-module optical stacks and CMOS Bayer sensors.

Nice To Haves

  • Dedication and passion for image-quality excellence.
  • Deep understanding of sensor characteristics, optics, and image signal processing in mobile imaging systems, and how they influence final image and video quality.
  • Ability to apply disciplined, time-sensitive practices from problem identification through concept validation and engineering implementation, using theory and image-processing techniques, including machine learning.

Responsibilities

  • Develop scene-understanding and auto-exposure ISP algorithms and perform ISP tuning.
  • Work on ISP architecture, configuration, and pixel-processing tuning.
  • Develop tone rendering and grading for target displays, including faithful remapping between SDR and HDR displays.
  • Develop auto-white-balance and color-management solutions.
  • Work on runtime optical flow, image registration, and image fusion.
  • Develop machine-learning solutions for real-time image processing with low latency and low power consumption.
  • Collaborate with teams including Silicon Design, Camera Hardware, and QA on camera technologies and image quality.
