CAM Applications Manufacturing Engineer (Onsite)

RTX•East Hartford, CT
•Onsite

About The Position

Pratt & Whitney’s Core Manufacturing Engineering organization is seeking a CAM applications engineer with multi-axis numerical control (NC) programming expertise for its Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Deployment team. Pratt & Whitney manufactures complex aerospace components for commercial and military engine programs. The engineer will provide innovative NC solutions to Module Center Operations and Repair Operations, with occasional support to suppliers and joint venture partners, elevating the methods and technology used by NC programming departments. The role works across Design and Manufacturing teams to identify CAM tools and standard methodologies that maximize the use of Engineering Product Definition in a Computer Aided Manufacturing environment. It supports new product introduction, mature-product cost reduction, closed-loop process control, NC verification, continuous improvement of standard work, and enterprise transitions involving NX post-processing, model-based definition, CAM tools, and software releases. The position is onsite in East Hartford, Connecticut, and requires U.S. citizenship because of government-contract access requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or 10+ years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • At least 5 years of experience programming lathes, mill-turns, and multi-axis mills using Siemens NX.
  • Strong working knowledge of CNC controls, including Siemens, Fanuc, Okuma OSP, Heidenhain, and Allen-Bradley, and of macro programming.
  • Advanced knowledge of high-speed machining techniques, dynamic toolpath application, cutting-tool technology, and machine-tool capabilities for designing NC programs with sound machining processes.
  • High proficiency in Siemens NX CAD, including assembly modeling, WAVE linking, and surface modeling as they relate to proper CAM workflow.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to government contracts.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering.
  • Ability and willingness to learn NX Post Configurator and IS&V customization.
  • Prior use of data acquisition systems or understanding of their concepts.
  • Advanced experience in TCL programming.
  • A full understanding of other programming languages, including NX Open, Python, C, and Perl, is highly desirable.
  • System design and integration skills.
  • Six years of experience with machine-control logic and post-processor creation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide CAM application solutions for process development on new product introduction.
  • Support cost reduction for mature products by improving part processing time through efficient CAM technology and mistake-proofing techniques.
  • Integrate closed-loop methodology using on-machine probing and data collection to enable process control and reduce operator intervention, including Siemens probing cycles and Renishaw Inspection Plus probing cycles.
  • Provide analytical recommendations to optimize programs and machine-tool capabilities using machining modeling software such as Third Wave Production Module.
  • Provide leadership and expertise in NC verification software, including CGTech Vericut and NX Integrated Simulation & Verification (IS&V).
  • Support continuous improvement of documented standard methodologies and standard work for the NC sub-discipline.
  • Support the enterprise transition from NX Post Builder to NX Post Configurator with IS&V, driving projects with internal customers from initial data capture through completion.
  • Support testing and creation of standard work for the enterprise transition to model-based definition as it relates to CAM, including Teamcenter Manufacturing Resource Library and Shop Floor Connect.
  • Support legacy standalone CAM tools and integrated NX utilities, and develop and execute plans to modernize or retire them as needed.
  • Support annual NX release activities, including software testing and manufacturing custom-data migration.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k) match.
  • Flexible spending accounts.
  • Flexible work schedules.
  • Employee assistance program.
