About The Position

Under general supervision, the Call Taker receives and evaluates requests for emergency and non-emergency service. This position is responsible for accurately entering fire, emergency medical, and local government calls into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system for dispatchers. The Call Taker class is distinguished by responsibility for receiving, assessing, and processing emergency and nonemergency calls involving public safety. Incumbents utilize protocol assessments and exercise discretion while applying established procedures to ensure accurate and timely response. CONFIRE, JPA is a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) located in San Bernardino County California established to provide communications, dispatch, computer information systems support (IS), and geographic information systems (GIS) to CONFIRE member and contract agencies. The CONFIRE Communications Center's (Comm Center) primary function is to provide 24-hour/365 day direct fire, EMS, and rescue dispatch services to CONFIRE agencies. Beyond the direct fire dispatch role, Comm Center also functions as the San Bernardino County (XBO) Operational Area dispatch, which provides large incident coordination for fire, local government, and emergency medical resources on a countywide basis.

Requirements

  • Typing speed of 30 WPM
  • Candidates must undergo and successfully complete a background investigation, including a fingerprint check, and medical examination.
  • Candidates must be available for all shifts.
  • Incumbents will be required to work rotating shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and evenings, as well as mandatory overtime.
  • Incumbents must be available to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and graveyard shifts, as required to meet operational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and evaluates requests for emergency and non-emergency service.
  • Accurately enters fire, emergency medical, and local government calls into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system for dispatchers.
  • Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service and inquiries from the public and enters information in the CAD system.
  • Screens incoming calls to determine nature and urgency.
  • Applies protocol questioning, provides pre-arrival instructions and adjusts urgency as needed according to guidelines.
  • Provides general information to the public regarding regulations and department policies; transfers low acuity, or non-emergency calls to appropriate agencies.
  • Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
