About The Position

We are hiring a California Workers’ Compensation Consultant to join Marsh’s Claims Consulting Practice. This hybrid role (three days per week in-office) role blends deep technical mastery of California workers’ compensation law and claims practices with a consultative, outcomes-focused mindset. This position focuses on evaluating CA workers’ compensation claims, identifying and driving practical solutions, and improving claim and program performance. As a seasoned individual contributor, you’ll work independently to assess high-exposure, complex and litigated California Workers’ Compensation claims, collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and help deliver measurable improvements and claim outcomes for clients.

Requirements

  • Collaborate effectively with TPAs, carriers, claim administrators, and clients to achieve efficient, compliant claim resolutions.
  • Use strong problem-solving skills to identify pivotal issues and recommend pragmatic strategies that move claims to resolution.
  • Lead case-level strategy conversations with adjusters, TPAs, carriers, defense counsel, and clients.
  • Own the quality of assigned deliverables and ensure work meets the practice’s standards for accuracy, clarity, and impact.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of claims, insurance, and risk management trends to generate actionable insights for clients.
  • Challenge existing practices and propose innovative, evidence-based solutions that improve quality, compliance, and performance.
  • Communicate findings clearly and persuasively to both operational and management-level audiences.
  • Support teammates by sharing expertise, contributing to process improvements, and mentoring less-experienced colleagues.
  • BA/BS degree in a relevant field or equivalent insurance/claims experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ significant experience handling California Workers’ Compensation claims, including complex and litigated files in both Insured and Self-Insured environments.
  • Demonstrated expertise with CA jurisdictional laws, claims processes, and resolution mechanisms.
  • Experience in claim management strategies that promote early resolution and effective settlements.
  • Proficient analytical skills and experience preparing client-facing reports and presentations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to influence claim outcomes through clear recommendations.
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and common RMIS or claims systems; willingness to travel as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven deductive reasoning and experience evaluating challenging claim situations to craft successful solutions.
  • Hands-on RMIS or claims system experience as an end user.
  • Prior leadership experience (2+ years) in a Team Lead, Account Services, or supervisory role with a carrier, TPA, or self-insured employer.
  • Practical experience with both insured and self-insured claim administration and regulatory requirements.
  • Track record of delivering results in fast-paced environments and managing competing priorities.
  • Ability to present complex concepts visually and verbally to senior leaders using Excel and PowerPoint.
  • A commitment to professional excellence and specialized expertise in the California workers’ compensation industry with industry recognized designations and certifications such as SIP, WCCA, CWCP, AIC, ARM

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate individual CA workers’ compensation claims, including complex and litigated matters, to identify root causes and improvement opportunities.
  • Lead strategy discussions and action planning with claim adjusters, TPAs, carriers, and client stakeholders to move claims to timely resolution.
  • Develop client-ready deliverables (reports, executive summaries, presentations, and recommendations) that clearly articulate findings, expected impact, and next steps.
  • Create and manage workplans for engagements or workstreams, track milestones, and ensure deliverable quality and compliance with practice standards.
  • Support implementation activities as needed (process redesign, KPI definition, settlement strategy, pilot testing, and change management).
  • Conduct audits and compare actual claim performance against industry best practices and client expectations.
  • Collaborate with practice leadership and cross-functional Marsh teams to escalate risks, align priorities, and surface opportunities to expand services.
  • Maintain continuous knowledge of CA jurisdictional laws, claims lifecycle best practices, and market trends to inform recommendations.
  • Contribute to knowledge management by documenting methodologies, templates, and lessons learned.
