About The Position

ProPublica is seeking driven reporters for its new California-based investigative journalism team. This role will focus on producing compelling, revelatory stories with national resonance that are grounded in California's unique context, exploring the consequences of state policies and the leaders overseeing them, as well as its significant contributions to technology, arts, sports, and higher education. The team will operate without predefined beats, encouraging candidates to pitch their passions, whether it be a specific area like water or homelessness, an industry like tech or entertainment, or a generalist approach. The emphasis is on stories that offer insight into California's unique vantage point and distinguish ProPublica's coverage from other outlets. This position is part of ProPublica's expansion into its sixth regional hub and will involve collaboration within the team, across the newsroom, and with other news organizations.

Requirements

  • At least a five-year track record of producing investigative stories, ideally in California.
  • A vision for covering California and its diverse communities.
  • Experience with a wide range of reporting techniques, including exclusive data analyses and creative strategies for reader and source engagement.
  • Ability to conduct both quick investigations and longer projects.
  • Strong collaborative skills and a genuine enjoyment of working with others.
  • Understanding of California and a vision for impactful storytelling within the state.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Produce investigative stories with a focus on California's unique issues and communities.
  • Pursue accountability stories that are both important and powerfully told.
  • Employ a wide range of reporting techniques, including data analysis and creative reader/source engagement strategies.
  • Conduct both quick investigations (a couple of weeks) and longer projects (months or more) with an accountability lens.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues within the team, across the newsroom, and with external news organizations.
  • Travel as needed for assignments, training, and staff meetings.
