About The Position

The Prep Cook is a fundamental part of the kitchen’s operations. As the first step in cooking and assembly, they prepare ordinary cooking ingredients into fantastic products that support the rest of the team. Prep Cooks also manage inventory, evaluate, and organize the kitchen ingredients and items to prepare the team for continued success. We cooperate to help Prep Cooks become quality control experts and deliver a shining standard for all our products to ensure guests are receiving the best possible product. Prep Cooks may also help with catering, school lunches, and other large projects as the café continues to grow. The position is best for people with interest in developing bonafide culinary skills and kitchen management knowledge.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High School graduate or GED
  • Must meet requirements of employment background check
  • Must have / obtain Food Handlers Card
  • Strong interpersonal skills and clear communication
  • Creative approaches to problems and unique scenarios
  • Availability on weekdays, weekends, holidays, and some evenings for Special Events
  • Availability from 6AM-6PM as requested.
  • Customer-service orientation
  • Strong ability to work under pressure and respond to deadlines and frequently changing environments
  • Experience working with Children and Families
  • Comfortable and capable around knives, slicers, ovens, grills, and other hazardous equipment potentially not listed
  • Basic Mathematic Skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Literacy in numbers, ability to calculate figures and amounts such as portion sizes in different metrics, as well as basic mathematic skills (subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and kitchen display systems; becoming efficient in necessary POS systems through training and usage to successfully meet departmental responsibilities.
  • Regularly required to remain standing at a workstation for up to 8 hours
  • Must have good communication skills (i.e., communicate clearly and effectively in both written and spoken English).
  • The employee must be able to see well and able read fine print.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Lifting and removing things from elevated spaces
  • Lifting potentially unbalanced containers (either due to liquid or lopsided packaging).
  • Must be able to reliably use knives and kitchen utensils to prepare food without risk of injury.
  • For employee safety, employees must wear close-toed, slip-resistant shoes, and adhere to staff dress code at all times.
  • Must be able to work in a well-lit, temperature-controlled work area.
  • May also be exposed to extreme weather conditions with constant ambient noise levels.
  • Must be able to work in an open area with other employees.
  • Employee must adhere to current company and CDC pandemic related guidelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 1 year of line cook, prep cook, or kitchen experience preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or other languages desirable

Responsibilities

  • Take daily inventory of produce and ordering to ensure proper item freshness
  • Monitor equipment for quality and food safety
  • Follow food handling and FIFO protocols
  • Prepare and organize produce using hazardous equipment
  • Cook, portion, and assemble all meals to keep team members stocked
  • Prepare meals when staffing is low or occupied to help with the flow of sales
  • Lead cleaning operations in the kitchen and dining rooms
  • Clean and disinfect back-of-house café equipment and dishware
  • Communicate positively and professionally to co-workers at all levels of the organization
  • Stay up to date on museum policies, exhibits, and events
  • Other duties as assigned
