About The Position

The Cafe Job Coach provides training, coaching, and accommodations support to the Crew Members at Chance’s Cafe. Chance’s Cafe is responsible for the oversight and management of the Chance’s Cafe job training and employment program. Chance’s Cafe is a food service-based job training and employment program for adults with disabilities serving the community of and around Highland Park United Methodist Church. Chance’s was founded in memory and in honor of Chance Urschel, who found pride and joy working in the kitchen alongside beloved family members. Chance’s Cafe is designed to provide the same opportunities for inclusion, connection, and pride in contribution that Chance experienced while baking for and serving others.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent preferred
  • Active Food Manager’s Certification
  • People skills, organization, task analysis, and being a team player are required
  • Above average culinary & recipe modification experience
  • Experience working with adults with disabilities
  • Knowledge of assessing reading/writing levels, communication needs, and potential accommodation needs for special education
  • Familiarity with systems of measurement used in cooking and baking, basic accounting and money management principles, and planning schedules and tasks for a team
  • Must be a committed Christian comfortable working in a United Methodist church environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide onsite job training and workplace support to Chance’s Crew members.
  • Assist with job-specific skills, workplace etiquette, and time management.
  • Support Crew Members with navigating workplace challenges such as understanding job requirements, resolving conflicts, and improving performance.
  • Guide Crew Members in learning new environments or tasks, help with the development of social and organizational skills and other “soft” skills needed for success.
  • Plan and provide accommodations on the jobsite.
  • Track Crew Member progress, provide feedback directly and to the Manager and Senior Manager, adjust coaching strategies as necessary to ensure individual growth and success.
  • Make and support plans to fade supports needed on the job, when possible, to promote independence.
  • Promote understanding of Chance’s Crew member strengths and needs within workplace environment(s).
  • Model appropriate behavior on the jobsite.
  • Help Crew Members understand and perform their job duties effectively.
  • Work alongside Chance’s Manager & Assistant Manager to train and supervise the Chance’s staff (employees, students, and volunteer workers) using task analysis on the following: Customer Service, Managing Inventory, Brewing coffee, Cleaning, Risk Management, Use of point-of-sale system, Financial literacy, managing money, and basic accounting.
  • Supervise Sunday morning coffee service at Mockingbird campus when needed.
  • Ensure all support volunteers are following the mission, core values and safety protocols of the Belong Disability Ministry.
  • Help to create a team of Chance’s staff that is confident, caring and who have strong work ethics.
  • Other tasks/projects deemed necessary Chance’s Café Manager & Assistant Manager.
  • Attend and participate in weekly Belong team meetings.
  • Ensure all contractors, volunteers, and participants follow HPUMC and Belong policies and procedures relating to safety, risk management, appropriate behavior, and operations.
  • Support Belong in creation and management of safe, quality programming.
  • This will include supporting creation and maintenance of Belong policies, procedures, and systems.
  • This may include providing backup coverage for other programs and will require being available to attend/work: (1) both performances of Spotlight Musical Theatre, (2) the Spotlight Short Film Premiere, and (3) any team-wide special Belong events or programs.
  • On days Belong is hosting larger events or programs, team members may be required to reserve hours during the workday to support team needs.
  • Support, as determined necessary by the Director and HPUMC leadership, Belong’s involvement in HPUMC’s churchwide events, including (1) the annual staff retreat, (2) Vacation Bible School, and (3) the Advent Festival and other important liturgical observances.
