About The Position

The Café Cook is responsible for performing, adhering to, and implementing all Herschend Enterprises’ Core Values and Newport Aquarium Guest Experience Standards, Policies and Procedures, and Safety Protocols to ensure a safe and efficient food and beverage operation. This role requires maintaining a positive attitude and appearance, approaching guests in a friendly manner, and arriving on time for all scheduled shifts. Safety is a top priority, and the cook must understand policies and procedures related to the Food and Beverage department, working collaboratively with other team members. Knowledge of aquarium activities, aquatic life, and special events is important for informing guests. The position requires self-motivation, discipline, and reliability, along with strong guest service and interpersonal skills. Responsibilities include setting up stations, preparing food, maintaining kitchen hygiene, documenting food waste, managing inventory, and adhering to opening and closing procedures. This is primarily a day shift position.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Must know and follow sanitary food handling procedures.
  • Friendly, outgoing and proactive approach to all aspects of position.
  • Ability to learn all facets of the Food and Beverage operations.
  • Ability to work effectively with all members of the team and always maintain a proper attitude.
  • Must have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check.
  • Ability to remain on your feet for long periods, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
  • Physical strength, including the ability to lift 25 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Perform, adhere to, and implement all Herschend Enterprises’ Core Values and Newport Aquarium Guest Experience Standards, Policies and Procedures, and Safety Protocols.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and appearance, approaching guests in a friendly manner.
  • Arrive on time and ready to work all scheduled shifts.
  • Prioritize safety while working at Newport Aquarium.
  • Understand policies and procedures relating to the overall functions of the Food and Beverage department.
  • Work with other team members/departments of Newport Aquarium to ensure effective communication.
  • Maintain knowledge of activities, aquatic life, and Newport Aquarium special events/promotions.
  • Set up stations and collect all necessary supplies to prepare menus for guest service operations.
  • Prepare a variety of foods including meat, seafood, poultry, vegetable and cold food items.
  • Maintain hygienic kitchen and café upkeep.
  • Participate in the basic functions of the Food and Beverage department including guest transactions, preparing food, and cleaning the lobby/café.
  • Cover, date and correctly store all food prep items.
  • Take accurate inventory and ensure food waste is properly documented.
  • Notify Food and Beverage Management Team in advance of inventory shortages.
  • Use food preparation tools and kitchen equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Maintain an organized and sanitized work area.
  • Use safe and hygienic food handling practices.
  • Implement opening and closing procedures for all kitchen stations.
  • Perform other related duties or projects as assigned by the Food and Beverage Management Team.
