About The Position

The Great Basin Institute, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, is hiring one (1) Cadastral Survey Cartography Technician in Rock Springs, Wyoming. This AmeriCorps member will serve as a Principal Assistant to the Party Chief, assisting the Cadastral land surveyor in all phases of survey projects, specifically the resurvey of the Wyoming-Utah state line and/or the Sweeney Ranch double corner investigation and resurvey. As a trainee, the member will function as an assistant to the land surveyor after an intensive daily training program. The position is a 20-25 week, full-time appointment (40 hours/week) from May 2026 to October 2026. The work is primarily field-based (80-90%), with the remainder dedicated to daily data maintenance and research in the office prior to departing for field work.

Requirements

  • Ability to hike in flat to moderately steep to steep terrain with a pack and survey equipment
  • Ability to read and analyze historical data to develop logical search areas in the field
  • Ability to generate and manage digital data
  • Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license
  • Ability to successfully complete and pass a federal background check prior to starting position
  • U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
  • Eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limited to earning equivalent of two full-time education awards)
  • Pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) name search and federal criminal background check
  • Adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement
  • Not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement

Nice To Haves

  • Undergraduate Bachelor’s (or graduate) degree in Geology, Geography, Cartography, Surveying, Civil Engineering, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or Forestry
  • Familiarity with the public land survey system (PLSS)
  • Familiarity with GIS
  • Familiarity with orienteering
  • Familiarity with surveying

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Cadastral land surveyor in all phases of survey projects

  • Drive a 4-wheel drive truck to and from the job site

  • Operate autonomously under supervision of the land surveyor after demonstrating proficiency (on occasion)
  • Perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the organization's ongoing needs
