CAD Drafter II – Ground Support Equipment

Blue Origin•Space Coast, FL

About The Position

The CAD Drafter II supports Blue Origin’s Ground Support Development Engineering Services CAD Support team by developing, maintaining, and submitting engineering drawings, system designs, and documentation for release. The role provides technical design support for ground systems hardware across mechanical/structural, fluid, and electrical disciplines. Supported systems include New Glenn launch pad and launch accessories, engine and space hardware test stands, transportation and handling equipment, advanced manufacturing tooling, and other ground systems. Using PTC Creo Parametric 12 and Windchill PLM, the Drafter creates and maintains 3D parametric models, 2D drawings, and Model-Based Definition (MBD) datasets according to company, industry, and governmental standards. This entry-level position is intended for recent technical design program graduates or candidates with foundational CAD experience. The successful candidate will receive a senior mentor, structured onboarding, tool training, process familiarization, and rotational project assignments across core disciplines. Work is performed with direct guidance and senior oversight, including during drawing checks and release reviews.

  • Foundational experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Knowledge of designing or drafting for aerospace, automotive, marine, or applicable structures, mechanical systems, fluid systems, or electrical systems.
  • Mechanical design and integration skills using 3D parametric modeling software.
  • Familiarity with applicable drafting standards, including the ASME Y14 series.
  • Ability to read and interpret the general intent of processes, procedures, work instructions, and technical specifications.
  • Strong willingness to learn and adapt to new tools and technologies.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

  • Experience using PTC Creo Parametric (any version) or Pro/ENGINEER.
  • Exposure to Windchill or similar PLM/PDM configuration control tools.
  • Interest in or exposure to Model-Based Definition (MBD) and 3D annotation practices.
  • Familiarity with large assembly management techniques in parametric CAD.
  • Exposure to piping/tubing design concepts or fluid system components.
  • Exposure to electrical design tools such as AutoCAD Electrical, Creo Cabling, or similar.
  • Interest in leveraging AI tools to enhance CAD productivity and automate repetitive tasks.
  • Bias for design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA).
  • Hands-on product development interest or maker/fabrication background.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain detail part and assembly models and drawings using PTC Creo Parametric 12 and Windchill PLM under direct guidance from senior designers.
  • Support development of Model-Based Definition (MBD) datasets, including 3D annotations, semantic PMI, and combined specification states in accordance with ASME Y14.41.
  • Assist with mechanical and structural design layouts, including steel frameworks, platforms, access structures, and custom machine assemblies.
  • Support fluid system design, including piping routes, tubing assemblies, and component layouts using the Creo Piping extension.
  • Contribute to electrical system design, including enclosure assemblies, cable tray routing, and panel layouts as the team transitions from AutoCAD Electrical to Creo.
  • Prepare design layouts, modify existing designs, and assist in identifying design discrepancies.
  • Review engineering drawings and designs for alignment with established specifications, drafting standards, and standard drawing notes.
  • Apply company, program, and industry standards, including ASME Y14.100, Y14.5, and Y14.41, to product definition data.
  • Support Windchill product structure organization, revision management, and change notice workflows.
  • Use AI-assisted design tools and automation capabilities to improve productivity and drawing quality.
