CAD Director

NE Tech AirScarborough, ME
$100,000 - $130,000Onsite

About The Position

Tech Air is a mechanical and HVAC company built by people who care about the work leaving their hands. We hire for roots, wanting people who plan to stay, know their coworkers by name, and take pride in a drawing set the field can build from without a single phone call back. We give our leaders real authority, ensuring that when a standard is set or a person/priority is moved, the decision holds and is not second-guessed. We treat drafters as designers, not production line workers. This role is for someone who wants to run a CAD group the way they always wished theirs was run, leading through daily contact, regular coaching, and reviews finished on schedule, giving drafters real ownership in the design side of the work.

Requirements

  • Seven or more years of CAD drafting experience in HVAC, mechanical, or construction environments.
  • Three or more years leading a CAD or drafting team, with a focus on people leadership over drafting depth.
  • A track record of keeping a team together through daily contact, coaching, and reviews finished on schedule.
  • Advanced command of the CAD tools used in mechanical and HVAC construction.
  • Working knowledge of BIM coordination and how CAD output feeds downstream workflows.
  • Proven ability to own standards, templates, and pre-release quality control across concurrent projects.
  • Strong command of construction documents, shop drawings, and RFI workflows.
  • Local roots and a clear reason to stay in the area for the long haul.

Nice To Haves

  • Technical school, associate degree, or formal CAD training.
  • A CAD or BIM certification.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure every drawing gets a review before it leaves the group, making rework caused by internal mistakes rare.
  • Trace any rework to the root and fix it at the source.
  • Ensure the field and project teams can build from the drawings sent, fostering trust in the numbers on the sheet.
  • Own and maintain the standards, templates, and conventions for the CAD group, ensuring uniformity across all projects.
  • Make deliberate changes to standards when needed, communicate them clearly, and ensure team adoption.
  • Read the schedule ahead and proactively move people to jobs that need them, resolving constraints before they stall a project.
  • Keep CAD hours close to plan by watching the work weekly and resolving risks before they become critical.
  • Bring risks to leadership early with a clear picture of what is at stake when the group cannot absorb them.
  • Ensure questions from the field and project teams receive a response within a business day.
  • Sit down with project managers every week to stay ahead of upcoming needs and maintain trust.
  • Lead through daily contact, regular coaching, and on-schedule reviews.
  • Ensure drafters know where they stand and where they are headed.
  • Give drafters real ownership in the design side of the work.

Benefits

  • Pay range is $100,000 to $130,000.
  • Full benefits picture to be discussed during the interview.
