About The Position

The Cabling and Network Technician is responsible for supporting the college’s physical and logical network infrastructure through the design, installation, testing, and maintenance of structured cabling systems and configuration of network hardware across multiple campus locations. The technician performs complex installations, troubleshooting, infrastructure upgrades, and moves/adds/changes, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards, building codes, and institutional requirements. This role supports the reliability and expansion of the college’s network infrastructure by maintaining accurate documentation, managing cable materials and equipment inventory, and collaborating with internal IT teams, project managers, facilities staff, and external vendors. The technician is also responsible for the installation, configuration support, and troubleshooting of network switching and wireless infrastructure, and contributing to the stable operation of campus network services. The incumbent is required to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to network incidents outside of normal business hours. On-call response may require remote troubleshooting or travel to campus locations to perform on-site support as required. Occasional overtime will be required to support scheduled maintenance and infrastructure upgrades.

Requirements

  • 3 year diploma/degree in Mechanical or Electronic Technologist, or other related field of study.
  • BICSI (Building Industry Consulting Service International) certification.
  • CFOI (Certified Fibre Optic Installer).
  • 631A Network Cabling Specialist License.
  • Belden IBDN 726: Copper Installation.
  • Belden IBDN 746: Fiber Installation.
  • Belden Brilliance Fiber Products Installation.
  • CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate).
  • Minimum of five years of related work experience.
  • Installing and maintaining structured cabling systems in enterprise or institutional environments.
  • Interpretation of technical drawings, blueprints, and network diagrams.
  • Use of structured cabling testing and certification tools.
  • Use of various hand and power tools.
  • Use of ladders, scissor and boom lifts, and working at heights.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Working independently and in a team environment.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Using Microsoft Outlook, Visio, Excel, and Teams.
  • Have and maintain a valid Ontario driver’s license with a clean driving abstract.
  • Ability to safely lift heavy objects, tools and ladders.
  • Troubleshooting, installation and administration of network equipment such as switches and wireless access points.
  • Using Cisco command line for troubleshooting and administration.

Responsibilities

  • Architecting, planning, installation, termination of copper and fiber optic structured cabling systems in accordance with industry standards and project requirements.
  • Analysis and installation of cable pathway and support systems including cable trays, racks, J-hooks, and conduit.
  • Installing, moving, replacing, and removing network infrastructure equipment including but not limited to racks, cabinets, UPS, switches, wireless access points, telephones, servers, storage devices, and power supplies.
  • Perform cross-connections of copper and fiber patch cords to network equipment and patch panels.
  • Ensures proper workmanship standards including cable bend radius, separation, dressing, labeling, grounding, and pathway integrity.
  • Coordinates and leads cable and electrical contractors.
  • Troubleshooting and resolution of issues related to cabling systems including signal quality, connectivity, and performance.
  • Leads the diagnoses and resolution of issues related to endpoint connectivity issues.
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting network closet UPS systems and batteries, and networking equipment such as access points, switches, SFPs, modules, and power supplies.
  • Troubleshooting issues related to wireless signal strength and interference issues including conducting wireless surveys.
  • Performs network switch diagnostics, administration and switch port troubleshooting using Cisco command-line and various monitoring application.
  • Monitors and responds to service requests and incidents accordingly to SLAs through the IT service management system.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for all cabling installations including labeling, diagrams, test results, and as-built documentation.
  • Producing closeout documentation including test reports, labeling schedules, markups, and photo records.
  • Ensures all work complies with applicable building codes, safety requirements, and structured cabling standards.
  • Stay current with evolving industry standards, technologies, and best practices.
  • Document diagnostic steps, troubleshooting activities, and resolution details within the IT service management system.
  • Manages accurate inventory of networking equipment, cabling parts and materials, and installation tools.
  • Retrieve network infrastructure equipment purchased and received through Shipping & Receiving and coordinate storage and staging of materials.
  • Ensure tools, materials, and bill of materials requirements are prepared in advance to support efficient project execution.
  • Coordinate with management, project managers, site contacts, and other trades to support project schedules and site access.
  • Other duties as assigned.
