About The Position

An experienced Structured Cabling Technician installs, tests, labels, and documents copper and fiber cabling systems that support voice, data, security, and AV networks in commercial and industrial environments. This role ensures work is completed safely, to code, and to industry standards while meeting schedule and quality expectations.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of structured cabling / low-voltage installation experience in commercial environments.
  • Working knowledge of TIA/EIA standards, basic IT/network concepts, and cabling best practices (pathways, bend radius, separation, grounding/bonding coordination).
  • Proven experience terminating and testing Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6A and fiber optic cabling.
  • Ability to read and work from prints, floorplans, riser diagrams, and cable schedules.
  • Experience using test equipment (copper certifier, tone/probe, light source/power meter; OTDR a plus).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail (labeling, documentation, workmanship).
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites.
  • Ability to pass background checks and obtain site clearances as required by customers.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in ceilings/crawlspaces; ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Industry certifications such as BICSI (Installer 1/2, Technician, or higher), FOA, or manufacturer-specific fiber training.
  • OSHA 10/30, lift certification, or similar safety credentials.
  • Experience with data center cabling (MPO/MTP, high-density panels, labeling schemes, structured patching).
  • Experience with DAS, CCTV, access control, paging, or AV cabling (as applicable to the role).
  • Basic proficiency with documentation tools (Excel/Sheets, handheld labeling systems, test result management software).

Responsibilities

  • Install, route, and secure low-voltage cabling (Cat5e/Cat6/Cat6A, coax as needed) and fiber optic cabling (single-mode/multimode) per design drawings, SOW, and best practices.
  • Build out pathways and supports (J-hooks, cable tray, ladder rack, conduit, innerduct) and ensure proper bend radius, fill, and separation from power.
  • Terminate copper and fiber (patch panels, keystone jacks, 66/110 blocks, fiber enclosures) using manufacturer specifications and proper torque/strain relief.
  • Test and certify copper cabling (e.g., TIA Cat6/Cat6A) and fiber (OLTS/OTDR as required); troubleshoot faults and rework as needed.
  • Label cables, ports, racks, and pathways to project standards; maintain as-builts and test results for closeout packages.
  • Rack and stack network equipment as assigned (racks/cabinets, cable management, patching, grounding/bonding coordination).
  • Coordinate site access, work areas, and outages with customers, GC, and other trades; communicate progress, risks, and material needs.
  • Maintain a clean and safe worksite; follow OSHA, NFPA, and company safety requirements including ladder/lift and tool safety.
  • Mentor junior technicians as needed; provide on-the-job guidance for terminations, testing, and workmanship standards.
  • Accurately track time, materials, and daily reports; support project managers with status updates and change documentation.
