About The Position

As a Cable Technician, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and testing copper cable and/or fiber optic cable in various environments. This includes maintaining, expanding, replacing, and repairing all plant facilities and subscriber apparatus to ensure service delivery to customers. You will troubleshoot problems requiring cable repair, maintenance, splicing, and faultfinding. The role involves making splicing rearrangements, using heavy-duty power equipment, hand tools, power tools, and specialty electronic measuring devices. You will also perform testing and turn-up of subscriber lines and plant facilities, locate and repair air leaks, and manage cable cuts and transfer projects. Additionally, you will install, maintain, repair, and test residential/small business telecommunication services (POTS and DSL), connect wires and cables, perform continuity testing, and interpret technical drawings and customer orders. The role requires working with telecom color-coded wires, interacting directly with customers, and supporting sales efforts.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Basic AC/DC knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of subscriber carrier
  • Knowledgeable in the efficient operation of test equipment used to verify cable faults
  • Ability to read cable plats and schematics
  • Knowledge of the telephone industry-standard color code and the ability to splice aerial, buried and underground cable
  • Physical ability to climb utility poles using pole climbers
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a plant technician
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and represented by a union. Depending upon the applicable collective bargaining agreement under which you may be hired, you may be: (a) required to join the union and pay union dues as a condition of employment; or, (b) required to pay union dues, but not join the union as a condition of employment; or (c) free to choose whether to join the union, but if you do join the union you would be obligated to pay union dues.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining, repairing, and testing copper cable and/or fiber optic cable in an underground, aerial, or buried environment
  • Maintaining, expanding, replacing, and repairing all plant facilities and subscriber apparatus required to provide service to customers
  • Troubleshooting problems that will require cable repair, cable maintenance, air pressure, splicing, faultfinding, etc.
  • Making splicing rearrangements on existing facilities in buried, underground, aerial and building work locations.
  • Using heavy-duty power equipment (e.g., compressors, pumps, blowers), hand tools, power tools (air and electric), and specialty tools, including electric and electronic measuring devices (e.g., multi-meters, volt-ohm meters), in the construction and repair of outside plant facilities
  • Performing testing and turn-up of subscriber lines, carrier plant, and/or fiber optic plant
  • Locating and repairing air leaks in aerial, underground, and/or buried cable
  • Locating, joining, repairing, and rearranging cable and cable conductors in buildings and aerial or buried plant
  • Initiating or performing cable cuts, transfer projects, and/or load balance cuts, and issues necessary cuts to prevent blocking
  • Installing, maintaining, repairing, and testing residential/small business telecommunication service (POTS and DSL)
  • Connecting wires and cables to terminals and attaching/detaching various kinds of hardware to wires, cables, buildings, and poles
  • Performing continuity and/or conformance testing
  • Reading and interpreting customer service orders, technical (i.e., mechanical, electrical, digital) drawings, maps, blueprints, diagrams, etc.
  • Receiving service orders, worksheets (detailed diagrams describing the nature and location of equipment to be installed or repaired), and repair tickets from supervisor or other designated employees and performs specified work
  • Working with telecom color-coded wires and cables
  • Interacting directly with Brightspeed customers and supporting sales efforts
