About The Position

High energy, hands-on position working with high school students and incoming college first-year students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. The UNM (University of New Mexico) Health Sciences Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (OfDEI) is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Peer Mentor position supporting its Communities to Careers summer pathway programs. Peer Mentors will serve as on-site liaisons for student participants, teachers, administrators, throughout summer programming.

Requirements

  • Ability to work 28+ hours per week, hours to be fulfilled between Monday-Sunday 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM.
  • Sophomore/2nd year standing or above as of Fall 2026.
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • 1-year experience working directly with young people and related to the responsibilities specified.
  • Must pass a background check.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing peer support to student participants. Students range from high school freshman – incoming college first-year students.
  • Assist with the organization and implementation of the student activities to enhance leadership skills and team building among the participating students.
  • Assist with the organization and implementation of a student research project.
  • Ensure compliance and enforce Communities to Careers program policies and procedures.
  • Act as a resource to program participants by sharing information about various aspects of the UNM community.
  • Assist the Program Specialist with organization and implementation activities.
  • Provide a positive environment for the students by establishing a strong rapport with them. Encourage, motivate, and help build their self-confidence and readiness to begin college.
  • Initiate and develop open communication with student participants.
  • Will assist OfDEI program staff in the fulfillment of the organization’s objectives and goals.
  • Chaperone student participants daily, on field trips, and off-site activities.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
