About The Position

The Town of The Blue Mountains is seeking a Lead Hand to provide working support for the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and safe delivery of services at the Beaver Valley Community Centre / Arena and Tomahawk Golf Course. This role involves performing front-line operational duties, coordinating assigned staff and contractors during shifts, supporting arena facility maintenance and operating systems, assisting with event and user group readiness, and helping to maintain service standards, safety compliance, and customer service expectations. Requirements

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in arena and/or recreation facility operations, and/or golf course operations.
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and ability to work on computer/software programs.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Possess a valid Landscape Exterminator License.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience providing day-to-day work direction, task coordination, or on-the-job training in an operational environment is preferred.
  • Basic Refrigeration Training (ORFA) is preferred and may be required within a specified period following hire.
  • Ice Making and Painting Technologies (ORFA) is preferred.
  • Equipment Maintenance and Operations (ORFA) is preferred.
  • Advanced Refrigeration Facility Operator (ORFA) is an asset.
  • Integrated Pest Management Accreditation is an asset.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs, facility inspections, contractor coordination, and public-facing recreation facility operations is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and maintain equipment while performing general landscaping and building maintenance at the Beaver Valley Community Centre and Tomahawk Golf Course.
  • Assist with ensuring efficient day-to-day operations and functions of all department-related facilities and programs including assisting with scheduling of all mandatory facility related inspections including preventative maintenance schedules and fire safety requirements.
  • Provide facility leadership during scheduled shifts.
  • Coordinate daily work assignments for assigned staff, provide task direction and on-the-job guidance, and support day-to-day operations at BVCC / Arena and Tomahawk.
  • Identify operational staffing pressures, scheduling issues, and service delivery concerns, and report them to the Manager.
  • Participate in the preparation of the Beaver Valley Community Centre and Tomahawk Golf operating and capital budgets through identification and recommendation of the type and amount of equipment, materials and supplies required to meet the requirements of the various programs and assists with the administration of portions of the budget once it is adopted.
  • Report to the Manager of BVCC/Tomahawk on a regular basis regarding status of projects, functions and activities within the BVCC and Tomahawk.
  • Liaise with other departments, ratepayers, and the public, as well as special interest groups on matters pertaining to the Beaver Valley Community Centre and Tomahawk Golf Course.
  • Take an active role in recruitment, selection, and monitoring of performance, providing feedback, and corrective actions for seasonal employees.
  • Assist in documentation of the assessment of existing Community Services infrastructure and property.
  • As assigned, cover operational duties for the Manager of /BVCC/Tomahawk during vacation, illness and as required.
  • Prepare, review, and administer division bid opportunities including contracts and document specifications for construction, maintenance, material, and equipment supply.
  • Provide on-the-job instruction, orientation, and task-specific training to assigned staff; demonstrate methods, techniques, and safe work practices required to perform assigned duties.
  • Coordinate and participate in rotation of “on-call emergency pager” as established and be available to immediately respond to after hours and weekend calls, where appropriate.
  • Monitor and ensure that the work of the employees and hired contractors is carried out in a manner which meets all health and safety policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Assume appropriate lead hand responsibility for compliance with all health and safety practices as it relates to the work in accordance with the standard operating guidelines and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Promotes a high standard of customer service to the public as well as to all internal customers.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Assist during special events, Senior hockey games, tournaments, and public skating with the operation and supervision of the facility during these events, which may include assisting with setup/tear down and major cleanup of special events.
  • Assist with ice installation and removal, perform and maintain proper ice maintenance, which includes flooding and scraping ice; edger operations; maintaining, recording, and monitoring appropriate ice thickness; performing board and glass repairs; and, conducting ice machine maintenance (e.g., blade replacement, etc.).
  • Maintain the compressor room, which includes initiating day/evening setting; logging refrigeration room readings on a two (2) hour basis; purging oil from chiller, charging compressors with oil, and overall working condition of the refrigeration equipment and notifying Management of malfunctions.
  • Assist with general administrative duties including ice time allocation, hall bookings, event coordination including training of staff.
  • Assist in the safe operation of the registered refrigeration plant under the Technical Standards and Safety Authority and Code B51 – Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Assist with scheduling of turf maintenance days in accordance with the IPM regulations and applying fertilizers, fungicides and herbicides as detailed in the application program.
  • Assist in the day-to-day maintenance of different types of turf, planting, cultivating, pruning and caring for plants and trees.
  • Assist with the maintenance of bunkers, drainage control methods, irrigation systems including pumps, valves, impact fitting and sprinkler heads.
  • Assist is the clubhouse operations which includes staffing needs, scheduling, money handling, and customer service needs.
  • Ensure all staff comply with all integrated pesticide management regulations under the IPM Council of Canada and the Ministry of Environment.
