About The Position

The Business Unit Manager (BUM) at EMCORE is responsible for the strategic direction, financial performance, and operational execution of an assigned product line or market segment. This individual leads all aspects of the business unit's success, from business development and customer engagement to internal execution and financial performance. The BUM will collaborate across sales, engineering, operations, and quality teams to ensure the delivery of high-value solutions to our customers while achieving internal objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, or related field
  • Strong verbal communication skills and experience creating and delivering executive-level presentations.
  • Minimum of 6–8 years of experience in product line management, program management, or business development in aerospace, defense, or high-tech manufacturing.
  • Proven ability to drive results, prioritize competing demands, and deliver under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with export control regulations including ITAR and EAR.
  • Working knowledge of FAR/DFARS and experience negotiating government and commercial contracts
  • Strong business judgment, data-driven decision-making, and customer focus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • U.S. Person per ITAR requirements (U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident).

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in a manufacturing or technology-driven environment.
  • MBA or advanced degree in a technical or business discipline.
  • Background in inertial navigation, photonic or MEMS-based technology is a plus.
  • Experience managing full product lifecycle and aligning product roadmaps to customer needs.

Responsibilities

  • Full top-to-bottom accountability for the business unit's financial and operational performance.
  • Develop and execute annual business plans, including revenue forecasts, cost targets, and margin improvement initiatives.
  • Identify and pursue profitable new business opportunities, including market and competitive analysis.
  • Drive value creation through pricing strategies, cost improvements, and strategic account targeting.
  • Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with OEMs, defense primes, integrators, and distributors.
  • Represent EMCORE at industry events, customer meetings, and trade shows (travel ~30%).
  • Lead proposal development and influence customer decision-making by selling EMCORE's value proposition.
  • Navigate complex customer negotiations and contractual commitments.
  • Lead multifunctional teams in the execution of key programs, ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Serve as liaison between customers and internal departments including engineering, operations, and quality.
  • Ensure compliance with ITAR, EAR, FAR, DFARS, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor performance metrics and drive continuous improvement across the business unit.
  • Oversee all aspects of proposal generation, contract negotiation, and program execution.
  • Ensure alignment of technical requirements, commercial terms, and gross margin targets.
  • Coordinate internal resources to resolve delivery, quality, or performance issues impacting customer satisfaction.
