About The Position

The Business Planning & Strategy Summer Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting strategic planning, portfolio management, and executive communications within New York Life Direct. Over the 10-week program, the intern will collaborate with members of the Business Planning & Strategy team and cross-functional stakeholders to support planning activities, maintain portfolio data, enhance reporting, and contribute to strategic communications that inform business decision-making. This opportunity is designed for rising college juniors and seniors who are interested in strategy, business operations, project and portfolio management, or organizational planning. The internship provides exposure to enterprise planning processes and business operations while offering opportunities to strengthen analytical, organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree and entering junior or senior year at the time of the internship.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an interest in using data and information to understand business challenges and support decision-making.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple activities, track information, and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to organize and present information clearly.
  • Collaborative and curious approach, with an interest in learning from and working with colleagues across different functions and levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency with common productivity tools, such as Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, and an interest in learning new planning, reporting, and AI-enabled tools.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Not available to individuals working under OPT or CPT.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest or coursework in business strategy, business operations, project or portfolio management, finance, analytics, or a related area.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies, portfolio management concepts, or tools such as Target Process.
  • Experience analyzing data, developing reports or presentations, or identifying opportunities for process improvement through academic, internship, extracurricular, or other project work.

Responsibilities

  • Support the annual Strategic Initiative Planning (SIP) process by coordinating planning activities, gathering and organizing information from Business Owners, tracking progress, and helping ensure planning materials are accurate, complete, and aligned with business priorities.
  • Support portfolio management within the Target Process platform and SAFe Agile framework by maintaining information for business-as-usual work, programs, EPICs, initiatives, and optimization efforts; validating data quality; and contributing to portfolio governance and reporting.
  • Configure and enhance reporting capabilities within Target Process to support portfolio reviews, leadership meetings, and data-driven decision-making, while identifying opportunities to improve the efficiency and transparency of existing planning and reporting processes, including through AI and other tools.
  • Partner with the Strategic Communications team to provide project updates, planning information, and other inputs for leadership communications, presentations, and business updates.
  • Participate in team meetings, planning sessions, and cross-functional discussions; build relationships across the organization; and present recommendations and project outcomes to members of the Business Planning & Strategy team at the conclusion of the internship.
