Business Operations Manager

Able InnovationsToronto, ON
Onsite

About The Position

The Business Operations Manager is a pivotal role responsible for the seamless day-to-day operations of Able Innovations. This isn't a role where you simply maintain systems someone else built; you are here to design, implement, and own the operational and people foundation of a company growing into a meaningful market. You will serve as the primary lead for Human Resources administration, regulatory compliance, office infrastructure, and departmental transition support. You are the connective tissue between people, process, and compliance. Because we are a lean, scaling team, you will be responsible for the end-to-end execution of your functions, from high-level strategy with leadership to the "ground work" of daily administration. This role is 100% on-site, based in Toronto, ON. We are building something tangible, and your presence in the office is vital to maintaining the connective tissue of our culture and operations. Why this role matters: You will work closely with the C-suite and Directors. Your work will be highly visible, and the problems you solve will directly impact our ability to scale. If you want a role where no two weeks look the same and where you can point directly to the infrastructure you built, this is it! While HR-forward, you will own critical projects that don't always fit neatly into a job description, ensuring the team has the resources and safety standards necessary to succeed.

Requirements

  • 3–5 years in a generalist operations, HR, or People Ops role. If you have navigated the chaos of a small, high-growth startup or a rigorous regulated environment, you speak our language.
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in Business Administration, Operations, HR, or a related field.
  • You have a proven ability to work independently on open-ended problems. We provide context and direction, not a step-by-step manual. You are comfortable defining the path forward where one may not yet exist.
  • You are an expert navigator of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • You are tech savvy - you have a natural aptitude for picking up new tools.
  • You have intermediate experience managing IT network setups, access control, and troubleshooting.
  • You possess a working knowledge of HRIS and payroll systems.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are non-negotiable. You have the emotional intelligence and judgment to handle sensitive HR matters with absolute confidentiality.
  • You have a strong attention to detail and a bias toward action.
  • You are self-motivated, analytical, and possess the "growth mindset" required to thrive in a fast-paced environment with conflicting priorities.
  • You are willing to step into tasks outside your traditional remit whenever needed. You see a gap that needs to be filled for the team to win.

Nice To Haves

  • Startup experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Health Canada standards and WSIB requirements is a significant asset.

Responsibilities

  • Own the People Foundation: Act as the end-to-end owner of the HR function. This includes managing the full talent funnel (sourcing to reference checks), seamless onboarding/offboarding (including hardware provisioning), benefits administration, payroll reporting, and drafting all employment agreements.
  • Drive Operational Excellence: Manage our Toronto HQ as a high-functioning environment. You will lead office and facility operations, coordinate with landlords and vendors, manage IT inventory, and ensure our physical and digital security protocols are airtight.
  • Uphold Regulatory & Safety Standards: Ensure we are "audit-ready" at all times. You will lead Health & Safety activities (inspections, WSIB), maintain meticulous documentation for Health Canada and other regulatory bodies, and ensure the team is trained on essential compliance processes.
  • Support Growth & Fundraising: Provide the administrative engine for our fundraising and grant efforts, managing rigorous application paperwork and reporting schedules to ensure no detail is missed.
  • Solve the "Unowned" Problems: New challenges arise weekly that don't have an obvious home. You will pick up open-ended problems - from inter-departmental transitions to marketing the employer brand - structure them, and drive them to resolution independently.
