About The Position

The Department of Children and Families is responsible for delivering critical child welfare services across Connecticut. The agency operates large-scale, mission-critical systems supporting thousands of social workers and case managers statewide. These systems are evolving toward a next-generation Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System (CCWIS), requiring strong data integration, reporting, and modernization efforts. We are seeking a Senior Business Intelligence / Tableau Developer with strong ETL and SQL expertise to join a high-impact data and reporting team. This is a hands-on technical lead role responsible for designing, developing, and supporting enterprise reporting solutions, data pipelines, and integrations across legacy and modern systems. You will work closely with business stakeholders, system integrators, and technical teams to deliver scalable data solutions and ensure high-quality reporting for critical child welfare programs.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of overall experience in BI / Data Engineering / Reporting
  • 5+ years of hands-on Tableau development experience
  • Strong expertise in SQL Server and T-SQL
  • 5+ years of experience with SSIS and/or SSRS (or Talend)
  • Strong experience writing and optimizing complex SQL queries
  • Experience with ETL design, development, and production support
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts (data marts, ETL pipelines, data modeling)
  • Experience in performance tuning and debugging data workflows
  • Experience working with version control systems (e.g., Team Foundation Server or Git)
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Salesforce integrations
  • Experience with MuleSoft or API-based integrations
  • Experience working in government or large enterprise environments
  • Exposure to legacy system modernization projects

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain Tableau dashboards and reports
  • Build and optimize SSIS ETL pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, and loading
  • Develop complex SQL and T-SQL queries, stored procedures, and scripts
  • Support data migration and integration between legacy and modern systems
  • Design data models including data marts, data dictionaries, and schemas
  • Ensure data quality, validation, reconciliation, and error handling
  • Optimize query and ETL performance for large-scale datasets
  • Work across multiple database systems (SQL Server, DB2, etc.)
  • Collaborate with business analysts and stakeholders to gather and validate requirements
  • Participate in full SDLC: requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and support
  • Work with system integrators to ensure smooth knowledge transfer and solution continuity
