About The Position

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is recruiting for a Business and Information Technology Specialist to provide vision, leadership and technical expertise for statewide program administration of Business and Information Technology programs and assigned career clusters and subclusters in middle and high schools. The Business and Information Technology Specialist would be expected to perform the following duties: Lead statewide efforts to ensure high-quality, future-ready Business and Information Technology (BIT) programs that equip students with the skills and credentials needed for postsecondary success and workforce readiness. Shape statewide CTE strategy by contributing to the development and implementation of the Virginia Career and Technical Education (CTE) State Plan and the federal CTE Consolidated Annual Report, ensuring alignment with federal and state priorities. Drive program excellence by designing, evaluating, and refining curriculum standards, instructional frameworks, and policy guidance for BIT and cross-cutting CTE programs to ensure rigor, relevance, and responsiveness to labor market needs. Expand educator engagement by promoting and managing the statewide application process for curriculum review committees, ensuring diverse and qualified teacher participation. Strengthen industry alignment by recruiting and facilitating business and industry panels to validate curriculum content, ensuring programs reflect current and emerging workforce needs. Integrating academic and career pathways through the development and maintenance of sample academic and career plans that support seamless transitions from secondary to postsecondary education and employment. Enhance work-based learning (WBL) outcomes by advocating for and supporting the use of state-approved WBL methods, ensuring student experiences are documented in academic and career plans and aligned with career goals. Translate policy into practice by interpreting and communicating state and federal CTE policies, regulations, and program updates to school division leaders and the public, ensuring consistent and accurate implementation across local programs.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of career and technical education services and program administration, including state and federal regulations, policies, and procedures for grades 6-12 and adults;
  • In-depth knowledge of Business and Information Technology and related career clusters;
  • Considerable knowledge of competency-based curriculum, research-based instructional practices, and high quality sustained professional development practices;
  • Considerable knowledge of project management, including the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks and deliverables with critical timelines; insight and ability to anticipate problems and develop solutions; and the ability to manage program resources and budget funding allocations;
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex information, performance data, and state and federal regulations and policies and communicate this information to diverse groups and individual stakeholders;
  • Highly developed interpersonal, communication, group facilitation, teamwork, and problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to write in a clear and concise manner using effective business English and grammar to convey technical information to professional and lay audiences;
  • Considerable knowledge of technology tools and skills in the use of computers, devices, various databases, spreadsheets, and word processing software, video conferencing software, and cloud-based storage solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Business and Information Technology, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of a master’s degree
  • Eligibility for a Virginia teaching license with a Business and Information Technology endorsement
  • Experience in teaching at the middle school or high school level
  • Experience in program administration, including professional development
