Business Analyst: AI & Automation

American Electric Power•Columbus, OH
•$98,993 - $128,688•Onsite

About The Position

At American Electric Power, the AI Solutions & Enablement team builds the platforms, guardrails, and solutions that let teams across the company work smarter, spanning both artificial intelligence and enterprise automation. We are seeking an experienced Business Analyst to be the bridge between the business units we serve and the architects and engineers who build for them. You will partner closely with business teams to uncover how work is performed, translate that understanding into clear requirements, and work alongside our architects to shape candidate solutions.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience eliciting requirements and delivering technology solutions in partnership with business stakeholders and technical teams.
  • Working familiarity with a variety of workflow and process automation technologies (e.g., UiPath, MSPP, Dataverse, SharePoint) and AI platforms (e.g., Copilot, Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, AWS Bedrock).
  • Strong process analysis and documentation skills — process mapping, current/future state, requirements traceability, and clear written communication.
  • Working familiarity with AI and GenAI capabilities and their limits, enough to shape realistic requirements and set appropriate expectations with business partners.
  • Working familiarity with automation capabilities — workflow and process automation, integrations, and where each fits relative to an AI approach.
  • Hands-on test design and execution experience, including user acceptance testing and defect management; comfort testing solutions whose outputs vary.
  • Comfort with data — reading a data model, assessing data quality and availability, and writing enough SQL or using analytics tooling to validate results independently.
  • Strong facilitation and influence skills; able to hold a credible conversation with both a field supervisor and a solution architect.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, business or related field of study; Or associate's degree in computer science or related field of study with 2 years of relevant work experience; Or High school diploma/GED with 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • In addition to any experience required above, 7 years of relevant work experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with business units to understand their objectives, pain points, processes, and data.
  • Document current-state processes and quantify the opportunity: volume, effort, cycle time, error rates, and the business value at stake.
  • Facilitate working sessions, interviews, and process walkthroughs with stakeholders ranging from field operations to corporate functions.
  • Translate business needs into clear, testable requirements, user stories, acceptance criteria, and process flows.
  • Work with architects and business stakeholders to frame the problem, evaluate solution options, apply the team’s tool selection criteria, and define the path to production.
  • Surface the constraints that shape a responsible design, including data availability and quality, compliance and records requirements, risk considerations, oversight needs, and current process ownership.
  • Contribute to AI governance by helping define requirements, control standards, policies, and production readiness criteria for AI and automation solutions.
  • Design and execute test plans that trace back to requirements and drive defects to resolution.
  • Apply testing approaches suited to AI solutions, where outputs are probabilistic rather than deterministic: evaluation sets, human review, accuracy and quality thresholds, and edge-case probing.
  • Test automated workflows end to end, including exception handling, failure and rollback paths, and the handoffs between automated and human steps.
  • Work alongside architects, engineers, data scientists, project managers, and vendor partners throughout delivery, keeping requirements current as the solution evolves.
  • Gather the information needed for governance and responsible use reviews, including the use case, data involved, risk considerations, and planned oversight.
  • Contribute to training materials, documentation, and change communications that help business users adopt what we deliver.
