About The Position

The Bus Person is responsible for assisting in serving meals, preparing eating areas, and maintaining cleanliness in the dining rooms. This role operates within a multi-program facility in Vancouver's downtown eastside, serving diverse populations including those experiencing homelessness, addiction, and other challenges. The work environment is typically a kitchen in a residential social services facility, and candidates must be comfortable with potentially disagreeable conditions such as dealing with angry people, verbal abuse, and working in hot, noisy, and crowded environments. The Salvation Army is a faith- and values-based organization that serves people of all backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Criminal Record Review Program clearance is required.
  • High school completion.
  • Current certification in WHMIS, FoodSafe, Naloxone training, First Aid with CPR, Mental Health First Aid, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (or willingness to be trained).
  • Six months of prior related experience, including institutional kitchen experience or equivalent.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude towards the homeless and individuals with substance abuse and concurrent problems, including mental health concerns.
  • Basic interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to follow instructions in verbal and/or written English.
  • Weekend availability is required.
  • Non-slip footwear is required.

Responsibilities

  • Sets tables, serves meals, and sets up dining rooms.
  • Ensures the safety of clients through proper handling of food according to Food Safe standards.
  • Follows legislative procedures and The Salvation Army standards for clean and dirty dishes.
  • Ensures appropriate disposal of food waste in accordance with regulations.
  • Maintains a high level of cleanliness of kitchen and dining rooms (cleaning dining room tables, kitchen and dining room floors, servers, and other kitchen equipment) at all times.
  • May prepare simple foods (e.g., toast, salad, tea, coffee).
  • Assists in donation and delivery sorting.
  • May assist and deliver catering food within Vancouver Harbour Light.
  • Does the dishes when there is no dishwasher.
  • Helps Cooks to prepare the ingredients when needed.
  • Performs other duties and accountabilities as required and assigned by the Food Services Manager and/or Kitchen Supervisor.
  • May be cross-trained with Kitchen Helpers and Dishwashers.
