About The Position

As a special education bus paraeducator, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on our students. Your daily greetings and assistance will help to set the tone for their school day and ensure they are safely transported to and from school. You will be a positive and supportive assistant, helping drivers by establishing an appropriate and welcoming climate on the bus. This position requires you to believe that every student deserves the resources and support required to help them learn. In addition, you should believe that students have a right to inclusion, equity and accessibility and for that belief to be evident in your work on the bus.

Requirements

  • Requires common sense understanding of detailed written or oral instructions.
  • Have a basic knowledge of appropriate student management techniques.
  • Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide measurements.
  • Requires reading, writing, and conversation at a minimum of eighth level.
  • Requires passing a criminal background check and a physical.
  • Possess the ability to relate well to students and adults by treating them with dignity and respect.
  • Have a basic knowledge of how to build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the bus driver in maintaining appropriate student behavior on the bus.
  • Arrive for work on time according to the assigned schedule.
  • Assists students in getting on and off the bus.
  • Supervises students to maintain safety while riding the bus.
  • Secure student adaptive equipment (i.e, wheelchairs, safety vests, etc.) for safe transportation.
  • Assists students in evacuation procedures during emergencies and evacuation drills.
  • Reports student discipline problems to the proper authority and provides a written documentation of inappropriate student behavior to the designated school supervisor or transportation director.
  • Conducts trip inspections after each run to check for sleeping children, lost articles, vandalism, and vehicle cleanliness.
  • Collects and turns in personal items left on the bus by students to the building administrative office or to the transportation director.
  • Enforces regulations against smoking or eating on the bus.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out of district school trips.
  • Completes written reports of all operational incidents including accidents, vehicle operations, and student behavior.
  • Regular attendance is required to provide consistent support of the department’s student transportation assignment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
