About The Position

The Bus Monitor position within the Operations/Transportation division is responsible for assisting bus drivers to ensure the physical and emotional safety of students during their routes. This role requires attending training, assisting with student loading and unloading (including lifting and seating), and operating special equipment such as wheelchairs and lifts. The Bus Monitor also assists with emergency evacuations, communicates professionally with stakeholders, and completes required reports accurately and on time. Adherence to the Bus Monitor Duties and Responsibilities document and other assigned duties is expected.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or state-approved High School Equivalency (HSE).
  • Ability to work well with staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • Exceptional integrity, commitment to confidentiality, excellent character, and strong professional reputation.
  • Ability to abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to be present at the physical worksite.
  • Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Must perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist bus drivers on each route to ensure the physical and emotional safety of students.
  • Attend training meetings as required by the Director of Transportation.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of students, which may include lifting, seating, and safety belting.
  • Become familiar with and operate special equipment for transporting students, such as wheelchairs, mobility chairs, and lifts.
  • Assist the bus driver in conducting emergency evacuation drills.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with school staff, students, and the public.
  • Legibly and accurately complete required reports on a timely basis.
  • Know, understand, and practice the expectations outlined in the Bus Monitor Duties and Responsibilities document.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
