About The Position

The Bus Monitor position within the Operations/Transportation division is responsible for ensuring the physical and emotional safety of students during bus routes. This role requires assisting bus drivers, including with the loading and unloading of students, and operating special equipment. The Bus Monitor must also be competent in emergency evacuation procedures, communicate effectively, and complete required reports accurately and on time. This is a non-exempt, hourly position for the 2026-2027 school year, working 178 days.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or state-approved High School Equivalency (HSE).
  • Ability to work well with staff, students, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • Exceptional integrity, commitment to confidentiality, excellent character, and strong professional reputation.
  • Ability to abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Must be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to be present at the physical worksite.
  • Must perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Must perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist bus drivers on each route to ensure the physical and emotional safety of students.
  • Attend training meetings as required by the Director of Transportation.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of students, which may include lifting, seating, and safety belting.
  • Become familiar with and operate special equipment such as wheelchairs, mobility chairs, and lifts.
  • Assist the bus driver in conducting emergency evacuation drills.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with school staff, students, and the public.
  • Legibly and accurately complete required reports on a timely basis.
  • Know, understand, and practice the expectations outlined in the Bus Monitor Duties and Responsibilities document.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
