About The Position

Willie Jeffries School of Excellence is seeking dependable, attentive, and student-centered individuals to serve as Bus Monitors for our morning and afternoon transportation routes. The Bus Monitor plays an important role in maintaining a safe, orderly, respectful, and positive environment for students while they are being transported to and from school. Bus Monitors are expected to actively supervise students, reinforce school expectations, support the bus driver, and immediately address or report behaviors that may compromise student safety. This position requires an individual who is observant, consistent, professional, and able to build positive relationships with students while maintaining clear behavioral expectations.

Requirements

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with children and adolescents.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Be able to remain calm and professional when responding to challenging student behavior.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and appropriate decision-making skills.
  • Be dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a consistent work schedule.
  • Be comfortable enforcing school and transportation expectations fairly and consistently.
  • Be able to work collaboratively with school administrators and transportation personnel.
  • Successfully pass all required criminal background checks prior to employment.
  • Successfully complete a tuberculosis (TB) screening/test and provide required documentation prior to beginning employment.
  • Complete any additional employment, safety, or transportation training required by Willie Jeffries School of Excellence.
  • Safely board and exit a school bus.
  • Sit, stand, bend, and move throughout the bus as necessary.
  • Assist students during normal transportation procedures and emergencies when appropriate.
  • Respond quickly to student safety concerns.
  • Perform duties in varying weather and transportation conditions.
  • Meet the physical demands associated with supervising students during transportation.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in appearance, communication, conduct, and interactions with students and families.
  • Understand that student safety is the first priority and that maintaining an orderly bus environment is essential to ensuring students arrive at school and return home safely each day.
  • Successfully complete all required criminal background screenings.
  • Successfully complete and document a tuberculosis (TB) test or screening.
  • Completion of required employment documentation.
  • Compliance with all Willie Jeffries School of Excellence employee policies and procedures.
  • Completion of any required student safety, behavior management, emergency response, or transportation training.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in schools, childcare, youth programs, transportation, security, behavior management, or a related setting is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Actively supervise students throughout the duration of the bus route.
  • Maintain a safe, calm, orderly, and respectful environment on the school bus.
  • Ensure students remain appropriately seated and follow all established bus safety expectations.
  • Reinforce schoolwide expectations for respectful language, appropriate behavior, and positive interactions.
  • Intervene promptly and appropriately when students engage in unsafe, disruptive, disrespectful, or inappropriate behavior.
  • Support the bus driver by minimizing distractions and helping maintain an environment that allows the driver to focus on safely operating the vehicle.
  • Assist students with entering and exiting the bus safely and orderly.
  • Monitor interactions between students and be attentive to bullying, harassment, conflict, inappropriate language, physical contact, or other concerning behavior.
  • Ensure students do not throw objects, move unnecessarily throughout the bus, damage property, or engage in activities that could create a safety hazard.
  • Maintain appropriate student seating arrangements when assigned or necessary to address behavior concerns.
  • Provide additional supervision and assistance to younger students and students who may require additional support.
  • Confirm that students exit at their appropriate designated stops according to established transportation procedures.
  • Immediately report serious behavioral concerns, safety concerns, injuries, accidents, property damage, or unusual incidents to school administration.
  • Complete written incident reports or other documentation when requested.
  • Communicate professionally with school administrators, transportation staff, students, and families.
  • Maintain student confidentiality and refrain from discussing student matters with unauthorized individuals.
  • Assist with emergency procedures and student evacuation when necessary.
  • Help inspect the bus at the conclusion of the route to ensure no students or personal belongings remain on the vehicle.
  • Maintain punctual and consistent attendance, recognizing that transportation services depend upon reliable staffing.
  • Follow all Willie Jeffries School of Excellence policies, procedures, transportation expectations, and directives from school administration.
  • Perform other transportation-related duties as assigned.
  • Provide active supervision at all times. This means continuously observing student behavior, addressing concerns before they escalate, reinforcing expectations consistently, and remaining alert to conditions that may affect student safety.
  • Develop positive relationships with students while maintaining professional boundaries and clear expectations. The goal is not simply to respond to inappropriate behavior after it occurs, but to prevent unsafe or disruptive situations through visibility, consistency, and proactive supervision.
