About The Position

The Bus Driver is responsible for safely transporting students to and from school, as well as on field trips and other extracurricular events. This role requires adherence to all traffic laws, mandatory safety regulations, and maintaining discipline among students. The driver will also perform pre-trip inspections, report accidents, and ensure the bus is kept clean and orderly. This position is non-exempt and reports to the Transportation Specialist.

Requirements

  • Valid Alabama CDL and school bus driver’s license required.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet all local, state, and federal licensing requirements and regulations required to operate a school bus and automobile.
  • Must pass and is subject to drug tests as required by federal and state law and the Board’s policies regarding drug testing.
  • Must pass the physical qualifications.
  • Must have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
  • Must meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Must meet driving safety record to meet insurance requirements.
  • Ability to operate the vehicle safely over an assigned route according to a definite time schedule, which may require driving during pre-daylight and dusk periods.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle in compliance with all traffic and safety laws and regulations, including defensive driving habits and posted speed limits.
  • Physical dexterity, coordination, mobility and visual acuity to safely operate a school bus.

Responsibilities

  • Adherence to all traffic laws.
  • Perform required pre-trip inspection according to state mandated guidelines.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  • Maintain discipline when students are on bus.
  • Report to the proper authority students with discipline problems.
  • Transport students to and from school.
  • Transport students on field trips and outgoings, athletic events, and other extracurricular events, often in the evening and at night as assigned.
  • Prepare for and assist students in evacuating the bus and to transport safety/first-aid equipment to care for injuries.
  • Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding and departing.
  • Report all accidents immediately to the transportation office and other appropriate officials.
  • Attend periodic safety meetings.
  • Keep monthly route report and daily pre-trip inspection report.
  • Keep the bus clean and orderly daily.
  • Identify needs and arrange for necessary repairs and maintenance work.
  • Regulate heating, cooling and ventilating equipment provided on the bus for the comfort of the passengers.
  • Keep to assigned schedule and discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Notify the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Exercise responsible leadership when on out of town school trips.
  • Transport only authorized persons.
  • Enforce regulations against smoking, eating and drinking on bus.
  • Lifting as necessary.
