About The Position

School Bus Drivers are responsible for safely transporting children to and from school and related events. This role involves driving a school transportation vehicle within prescribed routes and time schedules, picking up and discharging students at designated stops. The driver may also operate a special ramp bus, assisting students in wheelchairs. Additionally, the position requires maintaining order and discipline among passengers, conducting daily vehicle inspections, reporting mechanical issues, and completing necessary reports. The role also includes attending meetings and training sessions to stay updated on relevant codes and safety procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Valid and appropriate driver's license
  • Must have or Obtain a Valid Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License with a passenger (P) and school (S) endorsement
  • Safe driving record which meets the County Office of Education's insurance requirements
  • Has or obtain ASE school bus certification (s)
  • Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical and TB Test

Responsibilities

  • Drives a school transportation vehicle within a prescribed route(s) in accordance with time schedules; picking up and discharging students at designated stops.
  • May operate a special ramp bus; loads and unloads students in wheelchairs on and off bus, inspecting wheelchair for operational safety; operates ramp; positions and secures wheelchair in bus.
  • Transports students and teacher on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed.
  • Maintains order an proper discipline of student passengers according to district policy.
  • Conduct safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily.
  • Reports needed mechanical repairs when necessary.
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition.
  • Completes periodic mileage and other reports including passenger counts.
  • Attends various meetings regarding safety, first aid and training updates as required.
  • Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Work as a team member with other transportation employees.
