About The Position

This position is for the Migrant Child Care Program in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. The role involves coordinating and conducting vehicle maintenance, ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the center and its grounds, and transporting children. The Bus Driver/Janitor will also serve as a liaison between families and program staff, complete required paperwork, and participate in child safety drills and training.

Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess a valid CDL Certification with school bus endorsement.
  • Ability to work irregular and/or flexible hours.
  • Be insurable in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Must have a reliable car, valid driver's license, and adequate insurance.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Must have a current DOT physical and possess a current DOT medical card or complete a DOT physical exam prior to transporting children.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
  • Must complete a TB test showing absence of Tuberculosis within 30 days of employment.
  • If transporting children for Migrant Seasonal Head Start, must complete approved Shaken Baby Training prior to working with children.
  • Fire Extinguisher Training, Infant/Child CPR and First Aid upon hire or prior to transporting children.
  • Positions require occasional pushing, handling boxes, bending, reaching, and standing for long hours.
  • Position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in transporting young children preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and conduct maintenance of vehicles, including seasonal start-up inspections, routine maintenance, and final inspections.
  • Conduct daily walk-around inspections of vehicles before and after use, reporting any problems or concerns to the Center Manager.
  • Maintain an inventory of janitorial supplies and ensure "Right to Know" and MSDS information is posted and accessible.
  • Ensure chemicals are properly mixed, used, and stored according to the Hazard Communication Program.
  • Utilize procedures in the blood-borne pathogens policy for contagious spills.
  • Maintain a current list of children transported and ensure daily attendance is taken for accountability and security.
  • Supervise, provide technical assistance, and input on performance evaluations for Bus Monitors.
  • Participate in child safety checks at the beginning and end of each route, ensuring children are secured properly and no child is left alone on the bus.
  • Serve as a liaison between families and program staff, reporting any family information or concerns communicated during the route.
  • Complete all required paperwork, including maintaining and tracking vehicle operating expenditures, maintenance repairs, etc.
  • Conduct monthly bus evacuation drills with the assistance of the Bus Monitor and Health Service Worker, document results, and submit reports.
  • Maintain the center in a clean and sanitary condition according to cleaning schedules and UMOS procedures, including emptying trash, cleaning bathrooms, sweeping, mopping, and waxing floors.
  • Conduct monthly upkeep of central air heating and cooling systems.
  • Maintain outside building grounds, including lawn cutting, trimming, painting, power washing, debris pick-up, and snow removal.
  • Conduct daily inspections of the playground and equipment, removing debris or harmful plants, and documenting the inspection.
  • Transport and assist with supervision of children and parents during parent meetings, field trips, and at health clinics.
  • Participate in trainings for serving children with disabilities or special needs.
  • Assist with recruitment plan activities, including recruiting children with disabilities.
  • Report suspected child abuse and neglect according to state law and UMOS policies and procedures.
  • Develop bus routes in coordination with Family Services and the Center Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
