About The Position

This position combines two roles: a full-time custodian working 20 hours per week for 12 months a year, and a bus driver working 20 hours per week for 10 months a year. Priority will be given to this bus driver for summer school routes to extend employment into the summer as available. As a Custodian, under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. This includes sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, washing walls and fixtures, emptying trash, and policing buildings. The role also involves transferring equipment and performing minor repairs. As a Bus Driver, performs semi-skilled work operating a school bus, transporting students to and from school, activities, or events under the moderate supervision of the Transportation Route Coordinator. This includes performing pre- and post-trip inspections, cleaning the bus, fueling, obeying traffic laws, ensuring passenger safety, maintaining discipline, conducting evacuation drills, and recording mileage.

Requirements

  • Some experience in housekeeping.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, mops, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Must be physically able to lift up to a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to push, pull, and carry or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motion.
  • May require working on ladders.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as janitorial equipment.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear.
  • Minimal experience with at least 6 months of driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Valid commercial driver's license with passenger and bus endorsement in the State of North Carolina.
  • Must hold Commercial Driver’s License with P and S Endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, waxing, and polishing floors.
  • Washing windows, woodwork, walls, and other surfaces.
  • Scrubbing and cleaning restroom fixtures.
  • Replenishing tissue, towels, and soap in restrooms, kitchens, and classroom facilities.
  • Replacing light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
  • Emptying wastebaskets and other refuse receptacles.
  • Locking and unlocking doors.
  • Sorting and storing material for recycling programs.
  • Making minor repairs to furniture or facilities.
  • Reporting damages or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Turning heating and air conditioning equipment on and off.
  • Performing routine maintenance on heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Unloading and storing supplies and deliveries.
  • Performing pre- and post-trip school bus inspections; reporting operating and equipment deficiencies.
  • Transporting students to and from school, along with other activities and events.
  • Cleaning the bus inside and out, including washing, sweeping, and emptying trash.
  • Fueling the bus as needed.
  • Obeying traffic laws and observing safety regulations for school bus operations.
  • Ensuring passenger safety and maintaining discipline on the bus.
  • Completing disciplinary forms as needed.
  • Conducting periodic emergency evacuation drills.
  • Recording mileage and maintaining records and reports.
