About The Position

Ride buses and assist drivers to ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students with special needs. This role requires supervising students, managing their behavior, and ensuring the proper use of safety and adaptive equipment. The Bus Aide will also communicate with teachers and parents, assist with routes, and follow emergency procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities
  • No prior experience required
  • Must be able to evacuate self and students out of the bus in case of an emergency.
  • Regularly sit, talk, or hear.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • Frequent repetitive hand motions.
  • Prolonged use of computer.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities include close vision and color vision.
  • Regularly work with frequent interruptions.
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Predictable and regular attendance expected.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with wheelchair lift, ramp, lock, and special needs adaptive equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise students as they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
  • Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Manage student behavior and report student discipline problems to the appropriate administrator.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  • Become familiar with all routes to and from the school campus to assist the driver.
  • Monitor the use of safety and adaptive equipment by students.
  • Follow emergency procedures and help the driver administer first aid, if necessary.
  • Supervise the use of seat belts, safety vests, or star seats by students.
  • Operate equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and assisting students.
  • Become familiar with and follow procedures established by the transportation and special education offices.
  • Help the driver keep the bus clean.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Report to work in a timely manner according to the assigned schedule.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities expected for this position.
  • Maintain professional interactions with staff, parents, community, and visitors.
  • Demonstrate the ability to remain calm and withstand pressures.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to change in routine and adapt quickly to changing situations.
  • Demonstrate respect and courtesy to peers and visitors and assist fellow workers willingly.
  • Avoid speaking badly about the district and district personnel.
