About The Position

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Building Supervisor will be responsible for being the liaison between members and staff. They must maintain a positive interpretation and enforcement of facility policies, rules, and guidelines to the YMCA members, guests, and participants. This role is designated as a First Responder in the event of an emergency and requires demonstrating YMCA Character Values as an enthusiastic role model. The Building Supervisor ensures the safety of members and participants by promoting and following YMCA safety guidelines and procedures. They provide guidance to members and guests, are knowledgeable of facility rules and schedules, and assist in answering questions and resolving conflicts positively. This role also involves assisting with tours, welcoming new members, maintaining radio contact, completing facility checklists, reporting concerns, monitoring all activity inside and outside the facility, ensuring safety and security, attending training, checking emergency doors, and assisting with other assigned projects.

Requirements

  • Minimum age 18 years required.
  • A high school diploma, or its equivalent, is preferred.
  • Ability to work well with the public, have good communication and public relations skills, and skills in supervision of youth and adult activities.
  • Maintain current certifications in CPR AED, First Aid, Safety & Risk Management, Child Abuse Prevention and New Employee Orientation or the ability to obtain such training within 60-90 days of employment.
  • Ability to walk, stand, sit, tilt head, stretch, push/pull and/or lift objects, use all muscles and work in a kneeling or reaching position.
  • Ability to visibly observe participants and members.
  • Ability to be in a crouching position and regularly twist body at the waist, shoulders or legs
  • Ability to lift or stack materials weighing 50 lbs. Up to a distance of 200 feet
  • Ability to occasionally lift items weighing 100 lbs.
  • Ability to work in areas or on equipment that often creates conditions of dust and/or dampness
  • Ability to work with chemicals, solvents, cleaners and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray and aerosol forms according to OSHA guidelines.
  • Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments (i.e. indoor, outdoor, warm, cold and noisy)
  • Be informed and up-to-date on the latest developments in your field.
  • Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.
  • Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
  • Recommend participation in a variety of YMCA programs.
  • Support our YMCA annual campaign by inviting members to contribute.
  • Be able to articulate the role and the importance of volunteers.
  • Be informed about volunteer opportunities.
  • Provide an environment in which valuing diversity is encouraged and the 40 Developmental Assets can be built and emphasized.

Responsibilities

  • Designated as a First Responder in the event of an emergency.
  • Demonstrate the YMCA Character Values and be an enthusiastic role model to YMCA members and guests.
  • Ensure the safety of members and participants by promotion and following YMCA safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Dress Professionally: YMCA staff shirt, khaki or black pants/shorts, and name-tag.
  • Provide guidance to members and guests in locating programs or activities.
  • Be knowledgeable of gym, pool, and Wellness/Free Weight area rules and schedules.
  • Be able to assist members in answering questions and resolving conflicts in a positive manner.
  • Assist Member Services Desk staff in giving tours.
  • Assist Fitness Staff in welcoming new members for Wellness appointments if needed.
  • Maintain radio or pager contact while on duty.
  • Check in with Member Services Desk and Director on duty at beginning of work shift.
  • Complete facility checklists during each shift.
  • Report any facility or program concerns in writing.
  • Monitors all activity both inside and outside: walk halls, check program areas, check locker rooms, and walk parking lot.
  • Ensure facility safety and security.
  • Attends all department training and meetings.
  • Checks all emergency doors and to be sure they are locked and alarmed.
  • Notifies supervisor in advance of absence and secures a substitute.
  • Assists with other projects or activities as assigned.
