About The Position

Supervises and participates in the work of one or more custodial crews to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment. Responsibilities include performing and overseeing a wide range of custodial duties such as vacuuming, carpet cleaning, floor stripping and waxing, window washing, pest control and restroom sanitation. Coordinates and supports event setup and breakdown to ensure facilities are prepared for scheduled activities. Holds staff meetings and participates in the hiring and training of employees. Performs routine inspections of assigned areas and oversees project work performed by their team and outside vendors. Provides regular progress reports to management and may be required to work weekends and participate in an on-call rotation for emergencies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of safe cleaning methods, including sanitation and sterilization.
  • Knowledge of the proper use, handling and storage of cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to operate custodial equipment (vacuums, carpet cleaners, floor machines, window washing equipment, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of safe lifting, moving and ladder-climbing techniques.
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn general and specialized software applications.
  • Strong professionalism, leadership, and mentoring skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safety, accuracy, and high-quality workmanship.
  • Ability to perform sustained physical labor, lift up to 50 lbs., and move moderately heavy furniture, equipment and supplies.
  • Applicants who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend to be eligible to receive an offer of employment from BYU–Hawaii.
  • Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must also accept as a condition of ongoing employment that they will hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend, with the understanding that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may adjust the criteria for a temple recommend from time to time.
  • Applicants who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must meet with the University Chaplain to verify that, if hired, they will accept the expectations and conditions described in the University’s Ecclesiastical Endorsement Policy.
  • Part-time employees of any other Church-affiliated employer are not eligible for concurrent employment with BYU–Hawaii unless specifically excepted.
  • Applicants must also cooperate fully in and must pass a background check to be eligible to receive an offer of employment from Brigham Young University–Hawaii.

  • Custodial certifications are a preferred but not required.
  • Valid US Driver’s License preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in, supervises, and reviews the work of their team, ensuring established performance standards are met, addressing performance deficiencies as needed.
  • Cleans and/or dusts walls, windows, desks, furniture, cabinets, light and plumbing fixtures, window coverings, lockers, and related items.
  • Cleans chalkboards/whiteboards, trays, and erasers.
  • Sweeps, dust mops, wet mops, scrubs, strips, seals, waxes, and polishes floors.
  • Vacuums, shampoos, extracts and spot treats carpeting and upholstery.
  • Services soap dispensers, towel and tissue boxes, and similar fixtures.
  • Collects and disposes rubbish, paper, and other debris; empties and cleans refuse containers from interior and exterior locations.
  • Keeps custodial closets clean, organized, and stocked at all times.
  • Performs pest control services in compliance with established safety standards and procedures.
  • Moves, sets up, and adjusts chairs, tables, desks, furniture, and equipment as required for classroom and special events.
  • Ensures accurate and timely setup for events.
  • May operate equipment such as sweepers, blowers, power washers, window washing equipment, ride-on vacuums, electric carts, scrubbing machines, and steam cleaning machines.
  • May operate university-owned vehicles and utility carts.
  • Meets prescribed performance standards and addresses performance deficiencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Oversee and manage daily tasks of employees to ensure productivity and accountability.
  • Assign projects and monitor progress to ensure accuracy and timely completion.
  • Mentor, coach and provide constructive feedback to support technical and professional development.
  • Hold regular staff meetings to foster open communication, reinforce expectations, and promote team alignment and support continuous improvement.
  • Design and conduct required training programs on the safe use of ladders, cleaning solvents, custodial equipment, cleaning techniques, etc. to build technical and professional skills, and ensure team members meet performance standards and expectations.
  • Actively trains, coaches, and mentors upcoming leaders within the team to develop leadership skills, professionalism and customer service skills.
  • Promote lifelong work habits such as integrity, dependability, effective communication, and professionalism.
  • Submit work requests for needed repairs in buildings.
  • Read and interpret chemical labels and safety information and instruct others on proper use and hazards.
  • Utilizes computer and mobile software to manage work orders, perform inspections, track inventory, communicate with the team, and maintain accurate and detailed records of work performed, materials used, and time spent.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the supervisor by providing regular updates on assigned tasks, progress, and any maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Collaborate and communicate clearly with fellow employees, supervisors, maintenance technicians, contractors, and campus personnel to ensure efficient facility operations and support.
  • Responds to emergency calls, assigns staff to perform necessary work, and participates in an on-call rotation to address after-hours emergencies.
  • Follow OSHA safety standards, building codes, and university policies.
  • May be asked to attend training conferences that require travel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
