About The Position

CEP Forensic is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Building Science Engineer to join their team in Edmonton, AB. This role involves tackling complex scenarios and solving mysteries backed by scientific reasoning. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of building science engineering and its application in failure investigations, combined with a serious approach to work and a great sense of humor. CEP Forensic, founded in 1972, has grown to 10 offices across Canada with over 170 professionals, specializing in various fields of investigation including fire, electrical, mechanical, structural, materials, collision reconstruction, chemistry, and environmental science. They have a proven track record of determining the probable cause of losses and failures in over 125,000 cases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, building science, or architectural science engineering.
  • P. Eng. designation.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in failure and damage analysis, design, construction, and maintenance of structures and building envelope systems for commercial, residential, institutional, and industrial buildings and infrastructure.
  • Concern for efficiency and strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Curiosity, good judgment, and a sense of initiative.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to write clear and concise investigation reports.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to staying current with industry developments and continuous professional development.
  • A sense of humor that can brighten up people around you.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and manage building science and structural failure investigations to determine the root cause of failure and damage to buildings, foundations, structures, and building envelope systems.
  • Attend client meetings and on-site inspections, perform surveys and condition assessments, and gather evidence.
  • Review technical documentation including drawings, standards, codes, regulations, material specifications, maintenance records, and modification records.
  • Perform Provincial Codes and Standards compliance analysis and reviews.
  • Determine circumstances surrounding incidents by capturing data, photographs, videos, and interviewing associated parties.
  • Safely secure evidence for further analysis and presentation to clients or in court.
  • Collaborate with other experts and practice leads to deliver holistic and robust analytical reports.
  • Provide expert testimony in court, if required.
  • Coach and mentor early career technical staff.
  • Assist with new business development and represent the company professionally.
  • Follow HSE guidelines, procedures, and policies to ensure the safety of self, others, and assets.
