About The Position

The Building Permit Technician is responsible for providing administrative and technical support for the building permit and inspection process. This position serves as a primary point of contact for contractors, property owners, developers, design professionals, and the public regarding building permits, plan reviews, inspections, and applicable codes and regulations. The Permit Technician reviews permit applications and supporting documentation for completeness, processes permits, maintains accurate records, calculates applicable fees, and provides information regarding permitting requirements and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One to three years of experience in permitting, construction, building inspection, planning, zoning, municipal government, customer service, or a related field; equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Working knowledge of office procedures, recordkeeping, computer applications, and customer service practices.
  • Ability to read and understand basic construction plans, permit documents, and related technical information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to accurately enter, retrieve, and maintain detailed information.
  • Ability to interpret and apply established policies, procedures, codes, and regulations.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with the public, contractors, design professionals, coworkers, and government officials.
  • Applicants must be authorized to lawfully work for any employer in the United States.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a municipal or governmental permitting environment.
  • Knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC), International Residential Code (IRC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Plumbing Code (IPC), International Fire Code (IFC), Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code and applicable local codes and resolutions.
  • Experience with electronic permitting or community-development software.
  • ICC Permit Technician certification or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Previous experience in construction, plan review, building inspection, planning, zoning, or code enforcement.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, and process building permit applications and related documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist applicants, contractors, property owners, architects, engineers, and the public with permit requirements, application procedures, fees, and applicable regulations.
  • Enter and maintain permit, project, inspection, and property information in the permitting or records-management system.
  • Review construction plans and supporting documents for completeness and compliance with established submittal requirements.
  • Calculate permit fees and issue permits in accordance with applicable policies, fee schedules, and regulations.
  • Coordinate the routing of permit applications and plans to building officials, inspectors, plan reviewers, and other departments or agencies as required.
  • Schedule and coordinate building inspections and provide applicants with inspection-related information.
  • Track permit status, corrections, approvals, expirations, and outstanding requirements.
  • Process permit revisions, renewals, extensions, cancellations, and final documentation.
  • Maintain organized electronic and paper permit files and ensure records are accurate and up to date.
  • Research permit and property records and respond to requests for information in accordance with applicable public-records requirements.
  • Explain building codes, zoning requirements, ordinances, policies, and permitting procedures within the scope of the position.
  • Identify incomplete applications or missing information and communicate required corrections to applicants.
  • Receive and process payments and maintain accurate financial and permit records.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, notices, and other documents related to permitting activities.
  • Assist with resolving customer concerns and direct technical or code-related questions to the appropriate building official or inspector.
  • Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive or official records.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
