About The Position

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is seeking a Building Operating Engineer for its Physical Plant department on the Rockford Campus. This role is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all building heating, cooling, mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. UIC is a major urban public research university, one of the largest employers in Chicago, and is committed to diversity and student success. This position is located on the Rockford Campus, 90 miles northwest of Chicago, and requires on-site work.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years (36 months) of full-time employment in the maintenance of building mechanical equipment and/or as a mechanic of refrigeration, ventilation, and/or food-service equipment.
  • Illinois Residency is required within 180 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and inspect heating systems, ventilation systems, air conditioning systems, geothermal systems, lighting and power systems, pneumatic and electrical control systems, and BAS systems.
  • Perform repair and maintenance to building structures or recommend the need for contractual services.
  • Carry out the department's preventive maintenance program involving all building operating and electric systems.
  • Provide recommendations for additional PM procedures as needed.
  • Keep clear, concise, and complete records and logs on equipment, parts, chemicals, etc., and submit weekly reports to the State Water Survey.
  • Maintain inventory of department equipment and consumables, and prepare reports as required.
  • Consult with and advise the Coordinator regarding observations relative to building operating and electric systems and action to be taken.
  • Order and/or obtain parts according to established procedures.
  • May be responsible for periodic routine visits to the community health center to carry out preventive maintenance program or other building-related repairs and projects.
  • May supervise one or more workers when assistance is required to complete a variety of maintenance projects or to perform the ongoing preventive maintenance routine.
