About The Position

The building maintenance worker is responsible for routine facility functions such as cleanliness, maintenance, safety, sanitation, mechanical equipment operation, security, room rental set ups and break downs, and acceptable building appearance.

Requirements

  • A high school graduate with two or more years building maintenance or janitorial experience.
  • Must have a valid Illinois State Drivers License and safe driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • The use of snow blowers when necessary is encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Daily custodial duties of all class rooms, meeting rooms, hallways, offices, gymnasiums, dance studio, showers, restrooms, kitchens, and entrances.
  • Check daily maintenance schedule and complete all room setups, breakdowns or cleanups as necessary.
  • Maintain all floor surfaces including stripping, sealing, waxing and buffing as assigned.
  • Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and entryways including application of snow melting materials as needed.
  • Remove all waste and recycling from the building daily or as necessary and placing them in appropriate bins.
  • Maintain kitchen cleanliness including defrosting of refrigerators, cleaning ovens, burners and sinks.
  • Be alert to detect potential failures in all equipment hardware and furnishings.
  • Perform basic grounds cleanup as necessary.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers through oral and written communications.
  • Respond to internal and external phone calls, e-mails, comments and suggestions in a timely manner.
  • Promote District to patrons, guests and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental-specific safety rules.
  • Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.
  • Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly.
  • Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
  • Schedules must be followed and deadlines met.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, searching and lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
  • Use of fingers, hands and arms is frequent.
  • If offered the position, the applicant will be required to complete the District’s Employment Application and successfully pass a physical examination, drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Work is predominately done indoors in a well-lit, climate controlled building.
  • There is occasional outdoor work required, usually in the area immediately surrounding the facility.
  • There is occasional exposure to cleaning solutions.
  • There is minimum supervision.
  • Worker must be able to read and follow a cleaning schedule, and/or to know when cleaning/preventive maintenance/repairs are necessary and act independently to do so.
