About The Position

The Building Maintenance Specialist performs responsible skilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, installation, and construction of buildings and facilities. This role involves performing building maintenance and repair work, remodeling buildings, and performing preventative maintenance tasks. The City of Jacksonville is specifically looking for candidates with expertise in commercial HVAC systems, a commitment to preventive maintenance, and a customer-service mindset. This position is part of a career development track with opportunities for non-competitive promotions to Building Maintenance Specialist II and III as certifications and institutional knowledge are gained. Facilities Maintenance Services provides proactive maintenance, makes repairs, coordinates renovations, and incorporates life-cycle management for all City facilities. As a Building Maintenance Specialist, you will work alongside other maintenance professionals to ensure City buildings are maintained to a high level.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina
  • Some knowledge of the common practices, tools and terminology used in repairing and maintaining buildings
  • Some knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials
  • General knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the work
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment
  • Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates

Responsibilities

  • Performing building maintenance and repair work
  • Remodeling buildings
  • Performing preventative maintenance tasks
  • Servicing/repairing HVAC systems throughout the city
  • Assisting with electrical, carpentry, plumbing, lighting, masonry and related building maintenance work
  • Assisting with building rooms and additions and remodeling existing rooms/buildings
  • Picking up and delivering materials to job site
  • Unstopping commodes; repairing leaks; changing wax seals, flush valves and vacuum breakers
  • Changing light bulbs
  • Cleaning and changing filters; checking belts on motors
  • Moving office furniture, computer paper; helping install computer wire
