About The Position

This is a Civil Service position with several current vacancies within the City of Saratoga Springs Housing Authority. The role involves responsibility for the repair and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. Work performed is of a general mechanical nature and may include carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, heating or electrical maintenance and repair, welding, sheet metal work, locksmithing, or related trades. While employees may specialize, they are required to work in various mechanical fields as needed. The work is performed under general supervision with independent judgment expected in carrying out tasks. Supervision of subordinate employees may also be required.

Requirements

  • Two years of experience in general building construction or maintenance activities involving application of carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades techniques.
  • Eligibility for an appropriate level New York State driver’s license at time of application.
  • Possession of New York State driver’s license at time of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Performing general mechanical work including carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, heating, and electrical maintenance and repair.
  • Welding, sheet metal work, and locksmithing.
  • Working in various mechanical fields as the occasion demands.
  • Carrying out the details of the work with independent judgment.
  • Supervising subordinate employees.
  • Installing and repairing electrical wiring and equipment.
  • Cleaning, maintaining, and repairing boilers, pumps, heaters, piping, valves, compressor motors, and generators.
  • Building, repairing, and/or installing cabinets, shelves, doors, paneling, flooring, windows, and locks.
  • Installing and repairing plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, and showers using industry standard techniques.
  • Inspecting property, including public buildings, to estimate needs and requirements for repair and preventive maintenance.
  • Repairing and installing oil, gas, and electric heating systems.
  • Performing masonry duties such as mixing plaster and concrete for repairs or new installations.
  • Preparing and painting interior and exteriors of buildings and structures.
  • Sweeping and mopping floors, stairs, and halls; washing windows and sinks.
  • Performing general clean-up work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass and weeds, clearing snow, and assisting in the collection of rubbish and litter.
  • Operating a truck or other automotive equipment.
