About The Position

Performs difficult skilled work utilizing specialized trade skills in the repair and maintenance of various City buildings, parks and related equipment. This is a full-time position with competitive benefits, including VRS retirement, paid time off, and medical, dental, and vision benefits ($26/month employee-only cost). Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and considerable experience in skilled building repairs and maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with an acceptable record according to City criteria.
  • Possession of Commercial Driver's License(CDL) or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
  • Relevant background checks must be completed and approved.
  • Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment.
  • May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, diagnoses, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on building related components and equipment such as heating, ventilation and air condition equipment, to include controls, heat pumps, thermostats, fans, chillers, air handlers, etc.;
  • Performs plumbing repairs on water fountains, restroom fixtures, hot water heaters, domestic water lines, sewer lines, swimming pool pumps, chlorinators, etc.;
  • Performs work on electrical components to include repair, replacement and additions of breakers, fixtures, ballast, receptacles, motors, etc.;
  • Climbs poles and repairs sports lighting system on ball fields, tennis courts, etc.;
  • Performs skilled structural repairs;
  • Performs rough and finished carpentry work on buildings and facilities;
  • Repairs and replaces roofs;
  • Repairs masonry, block, brick and concrete surfaces;
  • Repairs windows, doors and frames;
  • Repairs office furniture and fixtures;
  • Repairs and paints interior and exterior of buildings and equipment;
  • Responds to emergency calls, including snow removal;
  • Maintains records and logs, and prepares reports;
  • Maintains City's building fire extinguishers via inspection, replacement, recharging and code conformity;
  • Maintains City's election equipment via election set-ups, certifications, machine repairs and up keep, and offering repair service on election days;
  • Responsible for maintenance of department's tool room, paint room, and first aid supplies;
  • Maintains various City building time clocks, City Council chamber clocks, and the City Museum clock.
  • May oversee work of lesser skilled staff on specific jobs.
