About The Position

This position assists in performing a variety of installation and repair work required to maintain the mechanical, electrical, and structural components of County facilities. Duties include assisting in maintaining plumbing, heating, and ventilation systems and fixtures, as well as performing preventive maintenance and repair. The work is performed under the direction of assigned supervisory staff. This role is located at the St. Louis County Jail in Duluth, MN. The schedule is Monday - Friday, 4:00 pm - 12:00 am, with a shift differential of $.90 per hour for shifts starting between 2:00 pm and 10:00 pm. This position is part of the Civil Service Basic Unit Employees Collective Bargaining Agreement represented by Council 5 of AFSCME. St. Louis County requires all employees to be continuously authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis and does not provide sponsorship for employment visas.

Requirements

  • For Building Maintenance Helper: One (1) year full-time paid verifiable experience in the maintenance and repair of multi-unit, commercial, industrial or institutional buildings; or three (3) years as a General Maintenance Worker.
  • For Building Maintenance Worker: Four (4) years full-time paid verifiable experience in the maintenance and repair of multi-unit, commercial/industrial or institutional buildings, including building management systems.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • All employees must be continuously authorized to work in the United States, for St. Louis County, on a full-time basis.

  • Applicants selected for appointment must take and pass a drug test.
  • Applicants selected for appointment to a position with St. Louis County are subject to a background investigation.
  • All new employees must submit documentation verifying identity and employment eligibility within three days of their first day of employment.
  • Appointees to the position must successfully complete a twelve-month probationary period prior to being certified for permanent employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Upon completion of two consecutive, full-time years of service as a Building Maintenance Helper; a satisfactory performance rating in the most recent rating period; and recommendation of the department head, the employee shall be authorized promotion to the Building Maintenance Worker classification.
  • At the discretion of the hiring authority, the successful candidate may be considered for appointment at the Building Maintenance Worker level, contingent on minimum qualifications and department need. This would be determined at the time a job offer is extended.
  • Possession of appropriate level operating engineer’s license as determined by the psi and horsepower ratings of the boiler(s) in assigned County facility in which the vacancy exists.
