About The Position

The City of Livonia is seeking a Building Inspector to examine commercial, industrial, and residential building plans for compliance with building codes. The role involves inspecting new construction, existing buildings for code violations (building, electrical, plumbing, heating), preparing inspection reports, investigating complaints, issuing warnings and violations, and testifying in court as an expert witness. The position also enforces City Zoning and Code of Ordinances, including environmental control and neighborhood conservation duties. This may include special surveys, enforcement of noise and sign ordinances, rehabilitation programs, and licensing. The Building Inspector will answer public inquiries and work with the public to ensure code compliance. Additionally, the role may involve performing general duties of a Code Enforcement Officer. Duties can include any combination of assigned tasks.

Requirements

Citizen of the United States or resident alien with the right to work in the United States.
High school diploma or valid equivalency certificate.
Valid Michigan Driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Familiarity with local, state, and national building codes.
Thorough knowledge of construction methods and techniques.
Some knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and heating codes.
ACT 407 State Registration as Building Inspector and Plan Reviewer or ability to obtain registration within three months of hire.
If not ACT 407 state certified, must have credentials and experience needed to obtain Building Inspector/Plan Reviewer registration.
Experience requirements for ACT 407 provisional building inspector registration include: not less than 4 years of experience as a licensed residential builder actively engaged in the construction business; or as a building contractor, person in charge of general building construction, or skilled worker in structural carpentry, masonry, steel erection, or concrete construction; or as a project manager, superintendent, supervisor, or foreman actively engaged in general building construction; or as a licensed or registered building inspector from other states/countries with ICC master or certified building official certificate.
A degree or certificate in a construction-related field from an institution of higher education can count for experience (up to 2 years for a 4-year degree, up to 1 year for a 2-year degree).
Must submit documentation of experience (affidavit, notarized letters, copies of licenses, job description, permit history, official transcript, etc.).
Must pass an interview (if more than 15 qualified applicants, an evaluation will be made and the top 15 will be interviewed).
Must pass a pre-employment medical examination.

Nice To Haves

Dual state of Michigan ACT 407 certification as electrical, mechanical, and/or plumbing classifications in addition to the required building inspector and plan review classifications.

Responsibilities
