About The Position

Performs technical work inspecting building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems for compliance with state and local construction codes. This role involves assessing construction materials, methods, and stages to identify potential violations, defects, poor workmanship, inferior materials, and hazards. The inspector must be able to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints, and maintain satisfactory working relationships with building owners, contractors, and the public.

Requirements

• General knowledge of all types of construction materials and methods.
• Thorough knowledge of local and State building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes and related laws and ordinances.
• Ability to detect poor workmanship, inferior materials, and hazards of fire and collapse.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints of ordinary complexity quickly and accurately.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
• Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver license.
• Medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions.
• Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.
• Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in residential/commercial electrical, building, plumbing, and/or mechanical construction work.
• Technical or trade school training or apprenticeship program in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Construction, or related field.
• Associate Degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Building Construction, or related field.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
• Ability to obtain four (4) probationary certifications (not including fire) issued by the State of NC Code Qualifications Board (for Building Inspector I, Step 1).
• Possession of three (3) probationary certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (not including fire) and possession of one (1) standard Level I certification in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (not including fire) (for Building Inspector I, Step 2).
• Possession of two (2) probationary certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (not including fire) and possession of two (2) standard Level I certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (not including fire) (for Building Inspector I, Step 3).
• Possession of one (1) probationary certification in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (not including fire) and possession of three (3) standard Level I certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (not including fire) (for Building Inspector I, Step 4).
• Possession of four (4) Standard Level I certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (not including fire) (for Building Inspector I, Step 5).
• Two (2) years of inspection/construction experience under a properly licensed contractor, inspector, engineer (for Building Inspector II).
• Possession of four (4) standard Level I certifications or the ability to obtain three (3) probationary certifications and the ability to obtain one (1) probationary Level II upon employment in either electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (for Building Inspector II, Step 1).
• Possession of three (3) probationary certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical and possession of one (1) standard Level II certification in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (for Building Inspector II, Step 2).
• Possession of two (2) probationary certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical and possession of two (2) standard Level II certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (for Building Inspector II, Step 3).
• Possession of one (1) probationary certification in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical and possession of three (3) standard Level II certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (for Building Inspector II, Step 4).
• Possession of four (4) standard Level II certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and mechanical (for Building Inspector II, Step 5).
• Three (3) years of experience in residential/commercial building, electrical, plumbing, and/or mechanical construction work (for Building Inspector III).
• One (1) year of inspection experience under a properly licensed contractor, engineer, or inspector (for Building Inspector III).
• Possession of three (3) standard certifications and/or the ability to obtain one (1) or more probationary Level III upon employment or one (1) year of inspection experience under a probationary Level III in electrical, building, plumbing, mechanical, and/or fire (for Building Inspector III, Step 1).
• Possession of three (3) probationary certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and/or mechanical and possession of one (1) standard Level III certifications in electrical, fire, building, plumbing, and/or mechanical (for Building Inspector III, Step 2).
• Possession of two (2) probationary certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, and/or mechanical and possession of two (2) standard Level III certifications in electrical, fire, building, plumbing, and/or mechanical (for Building Inspector III, Step 3).
• Possession of one (1) probationary certification in electrical, building, plumbing, and/or mechanical and possession of three (3) standard Level III certifications in electrical, fire, building, plumbing, and/or mechanical (for Building Inspector III, Step 4).
• Possession of four (4) standard Level III certifications in electrical, building, plumbing, fire, and/or mechanical (for Building Inspector III, Step 5).
• Permitting and supervisory experience (for Building Inspector III).

Responsibilities
