About The Position

The City of Ventura is seeking a customer-focused and detail-oriented Building Inspector to join our Community Development Department. In this role, you will help ensure the safety, quality, and compliance of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects throughout the community. Under general supervision, you will perform inspections at various stages of construction, remodeling, and repair to verify compliance with applicable building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy, accessibility, and housing codes. Building Inspectors play a vital role in supporting safe development by interpreting codes and regulations, providing technical guidance to contractors, architects, property owners, and the public, and helping applicants navigate the permitting and inspection process.

Requirements

• A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of high school and three years of experience in the building construction or inspection fields, providing knowledge of carpentry, electrical installations, plumbing, and other related building trades are required.
• Senior Building Inspector requires 18 months of experience equivalent to that of a Building Inspector with the City of Ventura, or three years of journey-level building inspection experience.
• Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.
• Building Inspector: must obtain a Building Inspector Certificate, from the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC), within one year of appointment.
• Senior Building Inspector: must possess a Building Inspector Certificate at time of appointment AND obtain a Combination Residential Inspector Certificate, or separate building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical certificates, from the ICBO or ICC, within one year of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Perform field inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects during various stages of construction, repair, and remodeling to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal building codes and regulations.
• Inspect structural, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy, and accessibility components for proper installation and code compliance.
• Conduct inspections of mobile home parks and evaluate structures affected by natural disasters, such as fires, earthquakes, and flooding, to determine structural stability and identify safety hazards.
• Investigate complaints regarding building code violations and assist with zoning, land use, housing, and code enforcement inspections as assigned.
• Review building plans and specifications in the field and assist with plan review activities to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
• Collaborate with other City departments and provide technical guidance regarding building codes, regulations, and inspection requirements.
• Meet with architects, engineers, contractors, builders, property owners, and members of the public to explain code requirements, discuss inspection findings, and identify solutions to achieve compliance.
• Assist customers at the public counter by accepting permit applications, processing plans, issuing permits, and providing information related to inspection and permitting requirements.
• Prepare inspection reports, correction notices, and related correspondence while maintaining accurate inspection records.
• Provide training and technical assistance on City codes and procedures and assist with community outreach and public education efforts as assigned.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
