About The Position

Under general supervision, this position performs specialized technical inspection of construction projects and installations in new, existing, and remodeled structures in the following areas of trade certification: plumbing, mechanical, electrical, structural, and plans examination to determine compliance with the current codes and standards adopted by the Town. This position performs duties deemed to be safety sensitive. Employees holding this position participate in pre-employment and random drug testing under Town’s policies.

Requirements

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by two (2) years of relevant experience in construction or in building trades with work performed in conformance with standard codes.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Colorado for the type of vehicle or equipment operated; safe driving record and a minimum of two (2) years of driving history.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the principles, practices, and techniques of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and structural codes.
  • Knowledge of municipal building codes and enforcement of codes.
  • Knowledge of design and construction methods.
  • Knowledge of possible defects and flaws in building construction and corrective measures.
  • Skill to identify potential needs and problems with the ability to suggest workable solutions.
  • Skill in the provision of customer service.
  • Skill in the use of computers, various software programs and other types of modern office equipment.
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of building plans.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while in the field with the ability to follow specific directions.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively with builders, contractors, developers, and other members of the public.
  • Ability to work with difficult customers with the ability to resolve conflict.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Building Inspector I: Requires International Code Council (ICC) Certification in two (2) of the following areas of certification: building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or plans examination within one (1) year of hire.
  • Building Inspector II: Requires two (2) years of building inspection experience. Requires International Code Council (ICC) Certification in four (4) of the following areas of certification: building, plumbing, mechanical, energy, electrical, accessibility, or plans examination.
  • Building Inspector III: Requires four (4) years of building inspection experience. Requires International Code Council (ICC) Certification in all six (6) of the following areas of certification: building, plumbing, mechanical, energy, electrical, accessibility, and plans examination.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews permits, plans, and specifications; confers with customers to assure conformance with adopted codes in specified area of trade certification(s).
  • Conducts inspections in the following areas of trade certification(s): plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and structural.
  • Performs re-inspections to determine if trade deficiencies have been corrected.
  • Explains and applies adopted building codes to assist contractors and the public during construction projects.
  • Investigates complaints of code violations and enforces corrective actions to resolve deficiencies.
  • Prepares and maintains complete and accurate reports, logs, and records of all building inspections and actions taken to achieve compliance with Town of Parker regulations.
  • Provides positive customer service to applicants, the public and other Town departments and governmental entities.
  • Participates in staff development activities, team meetings, and professional training to enhance skill and competence.
  • Adheres to all Town and departmental values, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
