About The Position

The City of Sugar Land is seeking a full-time Building Inspector in the Planning and Development Services Department. This role involves conducting inspections of buildings during construction, alteration, or repair to ensure compliance with City building, electrical, and mechanical codes and ordinances. The Building Inspector will interact with the public, advise customers on existing codes, and provide code information. Responsibilities include maintaining an understanding of International Building Codes, National Electrical Code, NFPA, and other applicable state and local codes, completing inspection records and reports, and participating in the development of construction specifications, plans, and standards. Additionally, the role involves providing on-the-job training to other Building Inspectors. Regular on-site attendance is essential, and employees must be prepared to work as essential personnel during emergencies or disasters.

Requirements

  • Building Inspector I - Recruit: High school Diploma or GED required.
  • Building Inspector II: Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a certified building inspector. Or 2 years combined experience as an inspector and related construction field experience, with primary experience focusing on building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical codes. Construction field experience required or completion of the Building Inspector I – Recruit program. State Plumbing Inspectors License and State Medical Gas Certification required. Residential Combo certification or Commercial Combo certification required. High school Diploma or GED required.
  • Building Inspector III: Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a certified building inspector. Or a combined 4 years as an inspector, plans examiner or related construction field experience, with primary experience focusing on building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical codes. Construction field experience is required. State Plumbing Inspectors License and State Medical Gas Certification required. Residential Combo certification or Commercial Combo certification required. High school Diploma or GED required.
  • Building Inspector IV: Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a certified building inspector. Or a combined 5 years as an inspector, plans examiner or related construction field experience, with primary experience focusing on building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical codes. Construction field experience is required. State Plumbing Inspectors License and State Medical Gas Certification required. Residential Combo certification or Commercial Combo certification required. High school Diploma or GED required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections of buildings in the process of construction, alteration or repair to ensure compliance with City building, electrical and mechanical codes and ordinances.
  • Interact with and maintain good communications with the public.
  • Advise and consult customers on existing codes and ordinances pertaining to construction.
  • Provide customer with code information requested during or following inspection process.
  • Maintain an understanding of all International Building Codes, National Electrical, NFPA and other applicable state and local codes, standards or laws.
  • Complete all records and reports associated with building inspections.
  • Participate in the development of specifications, plans and standards pertaining to construction on behalf of the City.
  • Provide on-the-job training and/or assistance to other Building Inspectors on structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing inspections.
  • Work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, whether natural or acts of war.
